Is there any reason I can't put the helm of durafast or armor of russ on a land raider excelsior? It's a character, and neither one of thees items replace anything.

It would either be a land raider with a 2+/4++/5+++ or a land raider that rerolls all misses.

Currently as RAW, yes, it is legal.

Where are you getting the rules for a Land Raider Excelsior? It's not in the FW Adeptus Astartes index.

In any case, assuming it is indeed a CHARACTER, you can take those relics just fine, as the relics are not limited to INFANTRY or DREADNOUGHT characters.

That's a clear cut case of GW not understanding how to interact with their previous releases.

RAW you can do so in the same way the Crusaders Helm.

I want someone to model a Land Raider squeezed into a fancy suit of power armor.

Ah, fair enough. So yeah, totally legal to take those Relics since it's a SPACE WOLVES CHARACTER.

I want to know why someone would want to use a vehicle that can oneshot itself with an overcharged plasma gun.....

If it's within 24" of the rhino it gets +1 automatically. Or just don't overcharge the gun. Or perhaps use it as a suicide blaster wen it's got only a few wounds left.

You dont have to add the combi plasma gun to it.

No, not automatically. You have to choose a unit within 12" to get +1 to hit.

No. The Rhino prime and land raider Ex are meant to be played as a set. "Data Augurs" gives the LREx an additional +1 to hit within 24" of any Rhino Prime. Pg.61 of the imperial index.

Land Raider Excelsior doesn't have a 5+++. It has a 5++ which the Armour of Russ would bump to a 4++.

Good point. I'll just give it saga of the bear then so everyone gets a 6+++.

Dunno. Dont think it's terribly cheesy.

Land raiders probably should have a 4++ or at least 5++ in the current meta anyhow, to be remotely worth a damn and now you can give the one Knight-Crusader-priced LR that already had a 5++ and re-roll 1s on a 2+ a 4++ over its 5++ or a re-roll everything instead of 1 by wasting a relic and a 6+++ if you also make it your warlord. Castellans' are still gonna laugh and say thank you for that easy Warlord Kill.

Just take a Knight with a 4++/6+++, which has a third more wounds, can tap-dance, fall-back-and-shoot, etc.,. etc.. and use the 100 or so points you saved for a cheap Wolf Lord to hand out the re-roll 1 bubble if that's what you wanted and be done with it.

Yeah, I do not consider it cheesy at all really, and it can make sense if you view it from the right perspective. The Helm can easily be worn by one of the crew, and the Armor could be fragments re-purposed and incorporated into the plating of the LR. Just seems like a way to squeeze a little more mileage out of an over-costed model, and nothing about the combo is anywhere near to game breaking.
