What Legion do you play, and what does the rest of the list look like?

On moon miranda.

Broadly speaking, I think the Maulerfiend is probably more cost effective, though I prefer the look of the Forgefiend personally.

That said, context is important, what other stuff are you looking to run?

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

The received wisdom is that Maulerfiends are more competitive, mainly because they're noticeably cheaper, and because they're not competing with as much for their role - just Helbrutes, outside of FW. Forgefiends are quite expensive, and compete with Predators, Obliterators, Armigers, and Havocs, and plenty more FW options.

Having said that, neither of them are really top tier, and neither of them are trash tier. They also both tend to do better in pairs, particularly given that their 4+ to hit is relatively unreliable, being somewhat mitigated by Demonforge.

But besides that they're both AMAZING models, and I run them, well, not as often as I can ... and not as much as I want to. But they're damn nice centrepieces in an army, and they get a look in in my armies far more than equivalent strength CSM units, like Terminators, Chosen, Helbrutes, Bikes, Spawn, and Heldrakes.

The 4+ to hit doesn't really matter for Maulerfiends once you give them the lashes.

I'd say magnetize it. That way you could do whatever you want to.

That said, if you can't/don't want to do that. Go with the Mauler. Close combat is way funner than shooting.

Magnetize for sure.

Forgefiend is cool, but REQUIRES CP to be effective right now.

Lash fiends are generally speaking the way to go for maulers.

And in my experience, Forgefiends are a little better oddly enough. My maulerfiends have basically ran up the board and got blown off of it within a turn, while my Forgefiend sat in the back with duel cannons and blows away chaff and MEQs all day. The Daemonforge stratagem pushes it far over the scale in comparison to Predators.

Which means maulerfiend is bigger threat if they won't bother to take forgefiend out

Exactly. Your opponent in insulting your forgefiend by not prioritising it! Maulers aren't as effected by minuses to hit, because they do their damage up close, where they turn off RG, AL business. They're a prime candidate for warptime, and the stratgem is a must. If you have space in your army, and don't have another unit competing for that t1 warptime, then I think Maulerfiends can be pretty good.

If you do go with Forgefiend, avoid the Ectoplasma Cannons - they are a trap and never do anything

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Indeed, Magnetfiend is the best loadout. Rules change and someday the current "best" option will end up being the worst.
The best thing anyone can ever do with a multi-unit box set (especially large models) is magnetize them

Can attest, the ectofiend is garbage. Cannon is way, WAY more reliable.
