Hi Dakka,

I finished this chap for a Kill Team I'm working on for my store (I'm trying to get practice and momentum to finish a small 1500pts army). I love the mini and with the Kill Team Commanders expansion hitting soon it seemed like a good time to get him done. I went with the standard scheme as opposed to all black as it just seemed to fit better. I found it much easier to undercoat him on the sprue after some clean up and I painted the inside of his cloak and legs separately which was definitely the right call to make.

I'm not so happy with the freehand name on his shoulder pad but I didn't want to repaint it as detail can get obscured pretty quickly

Thanks for looking

Thanks all I appreciate it

I do find making your own decals is a great way to personalise your minis, especially Marines. You do need a good not too aggressive decal softener and a bit of patience though (as well as lots of spare decals lol).

I finished the Kill Team today and here they are - I've painted up 8 minis in total including the Chaplain for choice. Nothing fancy, just 3 Intercessors and Reivers and a lone metal Scout I found in an ice cream tub while cleaning out my bathroom

These are really really good!

I don't know why you're complaining about the freehand, it looks really good.

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.

Nice. What's your formula for the bone-colored plate?

Thanks for asking

All the skull symbols are clear decals applied over a light bone colour with the black and red painted on after.

I am thinking of doing a full guide for these, they're pretty simple but time consuming - here's the bone:

- White undercoat
- Wash in Seraphim Sepia all over, watching out for extreme pooling (a little is OK if you want them a bit dirty looking). You can either paint the other areas first, that way any mistakes can be gone over with white before laying down the wash or after if you're confident enough. If you want a smoother application then a touch of medium would help.
- Agrax wash in the recesses for depth.

*You could finish the process here as it looked pretty good if you wanted a rough and ready looking Marine*

- Layer a pale bone colour avoiding the recesses. I used Vallejo Model Colour Bone White initially then switched to the Model Air version which is a lot thinner but has a brighter finish. It takes a good 3-5 layers in places and you have to be careful not to overload the brush.
- Optional edge highlight of white or a very pale bone - Vallejo Model Colour Pale Sand or Ivory for example (I didn't bother as I knew I'd dirty them up a bit after).
- Agrax again for dirty streaks - I applied very little to the brush and ran it down so it just covered over the bone, targeting the areas where I though dirt would accumulate and run down. If you want to go further you can repeat the process on different areas to intensify it.

- The cracks were done with Vallejo Model Colour Woodgrain, then Black in the areas where the cracks branched out or met, then a highlight of Bone White to some of the edges to help make it pop a bit more. These are tricky to get consistent.

You could layer on the bone straight over the white and then be more targeted in your wash of Seraphim Sepia/Agrax for depth. I've done it different ways but this is probably the best method yet IMHO.

The trick is to avoid errors over the bone - especially the black as it's a real pain to cover afterwards. The Sepia wash adds a depth and subtle texture to the bone that might look a bit flat (clean but flat) otherwise. I wanted them a bit dirty which I think only suits the Mortifactor's skull and bones fetish

Fantastic, really clean painting and a striking scheme.

I'd assume your issue with the freehand is that it's not centrally aligned?
When I paint a freehand word, I work from the middle outwards in both directions to get it central. IE for 'Kane' you'd paint the A and N first, either side of the cental line

HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.
