Subject: Craftworld Alarial - the ghosts of those yet living
Greetings folks!
I've decided to start my Eldar plog anew here. It was previously on Warseer but that seems to be dead for the long term. So. Consider me a new convert.
Just a few quick words before getting started! I've always been more into the painting and modelling than the playing. I'm also not really familiar with the stories and lore beyond the actual codexes, so forgive me if I step on any toes.
Comments, criticisms, corrections and suggestions are very much appreciated - this is always meant to be a journey of discovery and improvement, after all!
The ghosts of those yet living, the path of vengeance.
The story, if you care
Spoiler:
The craftworld of Alarial was one of the earliest to flee the greater Eldar civilisation, escaping before the rise of Slaanesh destroyed much of that empire. For several millenia the craftworld remained completely untouched by either the chaos gods or the darkness which had consumed so many Eldar. Alarial became a beacon of light and hope, a place of song and celebration open to all peaceful folk. It served as a neutral ground for trade and diplomacy where all were welcome, its artists and performers renowned across countless planets. Beings of almost every race and world wandered the halls of Alarial in peaceful coexistence.
As all things, that couldn't last forever.
Close to a millenium ago a great cataclysm rocked the craftworld. In the blink of an eye the ship was torn asunder, all but a tiny fraction vanishing into the warp. Countless lives were lost, thousands more perishing as the remnants of the craftworld ploughed aimlessly into the surface of a nearby world.
Believing the disaster to have been an accident caused by a failure in one or more webway devices, tearing the craftworld apart and hurling it into the warp, the Eldar of Alarial have never given up hope that some or all of their missing Craftworld and kin might have survived. In the long centuries since they have tirelessly sought sign or evidence.
Many of the survivors took to the path of the outcast, wandering far and wide.
In recent years rumours arose of a derelict hulk drifting aimlessly from a warpstorm. Following them, Rangers from Alarial came across a wreck, its shape all too familiar. A shattered section of their once great craftworld hung in empty space. Far from the joyous reuinion they'd expected, though, what they found crushed the Alarians. Broken, ruined figures wandered the corridors and hallways of the dead craftworld, scarred and tortured beyond recognition. Corpses littered the walls and hung from trophy racks, foul symbols carved and slathered in blood on every surface. Everywhere was the unmistakeable evidence that their lost brethren had been the playthings of the Eldars' dark kin.
Though most of those tortured soul they found aboard the wreck were lost to madness, a scant few retained a glint of their former selves.
From them the Alarians gleaned a hint of the terrible truth; no accident had befallen their craftworld, but a deliberate act of sabotage by the Dark Eldar. For eight centuries their friends and families had been the playthings of the Dark Eldar, and countless thousands more still remained captive.
As one, the Eldar of Alarial abandoned their peaceful paths. Their kin will be reclaimed, the foul creatures who torment them will be destroyed.
And so, a shattered craftworld preparing for war:
The soldiers
Ka'tri Voidshot (counts as Illic Nightspear)
For the time being, Ka'tri leads the Eldar of Alarial, the skill and experience earned in her centuries long quest to find her lost kin making her the best leader they have.
Ka'tri was once a renowned and celebrated dancer. With the sundering of Alarial she lost her lover and took the path of the outcast, her former fiery and animated demeanor replaced with the calculating and calm of a remorseless hunter.
Howling Banshees
What small standing army Alarial supported always contained an unusually high number of Howling Banshees.
Since learning of the betrayal that befell their people, the Howling Banshee shrines are inundated by new recruits.
----------
And I have to go make dinner!
I shall update shortly with more units and info. Some are already finished, others in progress.
Until then, thanks for looking and any and all C&C is welcome and appreciated
"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos
"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
Spiritseer Kiri
Formerly a renowned singer, for whose voice people of many races would cross galaxies, her song is now reserved for the wraithbone constructs she commands.
Kiri was one of those poor souls recovered from the recently discovered wreck of Alarial, and one of only a handful who retained a vestige of their former selves.
Wraithblades
The stoic dead, returned to continue their fight. Since discovering the betrayel of Alarial, a stream of construct warriors have been awakened.
In acknowledgement of their first battle to avenge Alarial, Spiritseer Kiri daubs the symbol of their craftworld upon the victorious warrior in blood.
Gorgeous work Possumcraft I love it! The conversions and paintjobs are absolutely stunning and the backstory is very nice as well. If I'm not mistaken is the base model for the Spiritseer the witch model from the pathfinder line?
You've done gorgeous work on all your vehicles too, that hemlock is a work of art. The real standout for me however is the spider on top of your night spinner, as a huge fan of spiders that freehand just spoke to me. Fantastic work and I'm excited to see what you do next.

Next up back to some infantry and a WiP. These are going to be my Dark Reapers, though I'm toying with a different name for their individual Apsect. Black Saphires maybe. Dunno.
Starting with a unit of 5. Here are three normals and the Exarch who has an Eldar Missile Launcher.
And the fourth who was the test build and is mid-painting
These are the second iteration. I'd originally tinkered with something simpler;
but decided in the end it wasn't quite right. I liked the colour but not the weapon or aspect armour.
Probably a good time to shake my head and see if any logic or sense falls out.
SO... this all came about from one tinkery test model I made last year, adding a breastplate to a dark elf Witch Elf. I liked the result and decided to finish her off and see what I came up with. Then I started playing Dawn of War again (which is how I originally got into 40k in the first place) and fell in love with the Eldar. This plog is, I guess, what came next!
As it stands, I currently have the following:
Illic Nightspear proxy, finished
Spiritseer, finished
5x Wraithblades, finished
5x Howling Banshees, finished
1x Night Spinner, finished
1x Wave Serpent, finished (Interestingly, this is the second 40k model I ever bought and has been banging around since 2009)
5x Dark Reapers WiP 5x Rangers WiP 3x Jetbikes, finished
1x Wraithlord, WiP 1x Fire Dragon, Wip Hemlock Wraithfighter, finished
Not started:
10x Warlocks
4x Wraithguard
enough Witch Elves to bulk out all squads to max size
Love the design of those reapers, fantastic work. I very much like the one you have painted with the shoulder-braced launcher. The other painted one with the more traditional grenade launcher design, while well executed, doesn't quite feel as Eldar-y to me.
And that base, so many colours, so well done. It's mesmerizing, I love it. Looking forward to seeing you finish off that list.

Thanks very much and yeah totally agree the grenade launcher doesn't feel eldar at all. It's been the biggest challenge here, designing weapons that are both acceptable and replicatorable-ed.
The Jetbikes:
Formerly a troupe of expert performers, the Firedarts replaced their coloured smoke with lasers and took their acrobatic prowess to the battlefield.
A few minor details have leapt out from the pictures but mostly finished.
Those are phenomenal bikes, that speckling looks great and the hair on the riders is a great standout feature for me. I might have to mimic the way you did their hair for some of my own models

Long and busy weekend, didn't get time to do much hobby stuff at all :(
However, current WiP on my first 5 Rangers!
The black suit is done on them but the rest was just tinkering with a few colour options while I wait for a delayed order of paint.
A few spots need tidying up on the conversions. Damn photographs.
As with most of them, built on the Witch Elf figures. Probably a good time to try and explain my thoughts on the armour.
I really liked the idea of phsyco-reactive materials forming a sort of flexible Mesh armour. I imagine that the various Aspects would simply add to that rather than doing away with it, wearing their aspect armour over the top.
The black-ish bodysuit is meant to represent the mesh armour, a very flexible second skin that hardens psychically when impacted to provide protection.
I've got a Warlock Conclave being worked on now to enter in Septembers painting challenge. They're all being built on 3rd party models so conversion work to do
Anyhoo, thanks for looking!

Busy few weeks. Upshot is, I sold my house! So, I shall soon be homeless.
In between viewings I got some painting done. I present, a unit of five Rangers.
Very happy with them overall, though could use a spot of tidying up when I have my full kit available.
Beautiful work on the rangers. Their hair is really striking and lovely, the cooler colours giving a very stealthy vibe. The bright green gems are really well done, it's just a shame there's not a few more of them gems on the models to give just a little bit more opportunity for some spot colouring.

Gotta add a Wow! I love to see nice variant Eldar stuff. The free hand on the Weaver tank is out of sight awesome! I like the more dynamic howling banshees and the rangers are very nice. One of the poses on the rangers looks like she is bending over backwards and is a bit odd - not sure I see her in the finished squad though.

Thanks
She is there, right in the middle, it's just the pose looks more balanced from most angles She's leaning back a bit with her rifle as a counter balance. I was somewhat limited with posing the center trunk of Witch Elves as I'm nowhere near good enough at sculpting yet to make torsos from scratch!
It's been a hectic few months. I've moved to New Zealand and started to settle in. My modelling gear is very limited BUT I have made some progress on my Eldar!
The newest member of my Warlock Conclave: (is included somewhere here, wherever the attachment chooses to appear)
All I have right now are the paints and models that fit in my Citadel Paint Station which I shoved in my check-in bags (who needs underpants, really?) so updates will be slow for a while. I have a few more Warlocks ready to paint, and a few conversions in the pipeline. I think I also have the stuff to do a few Fire Dragons
Anywaddle, I am still tinkering away and C&C are welcome!
Beautiful model, you did a great job painting her, I especially like the blade on her staff. She's converted from the sorceress model from the pathfinder series of models isn't she?

Yup, 'Seoni, Iconic Sorceress'. All my conclave are to be various Reaper minis.
Glad you like her I was happy with the spear, too, except that after that came out so well I started to wonder if I need to go back and deepen the shades and highlights elsewhere.
I'll give it a go on the next one and see how it comes out methinks.
I think she looks great as is. If I was going to nitpick on anything it's maybe to add a couple hard highlights to her black bodysuit but that's really nitpicky.

I've recently finished some more Warlocks!
Photos aren't spectacular but I'm pretty much using daylight, my camera propped up on its own shutter cover and an empty cat-food box as a photo studio, so...
Currently I'm working on a counts as Vyper using a Harlequin jetbike WiP soon
