One of the things I have heard mentioned in a few places is that flying is too cheap and is borderline busted. However I heard an update helped patch that up...

So my question as a still-new player is ... is flying still "busted"? Is flying something that if one doesn't have in their force will put them against the ropes from the opening bell?

GW points don't bring balance. They exist purely for structure. You can get more balance from no points than you do from GW points. You however can get no structure in your game without points.

It is still easier to play with something flying than not. However it is not a big problem, and the better you get, the less important flyers become. The update that helped a lot was that if you put one wound on them in melee, they are grounded for a round (usually to their death).

I run a Varangur list with no flyers, and I do extremely well with the list.

In my League of Rhordia lists however, I use 1-2 cheap flyers that I really donĀ“t want to drop from the list, so the faction / type of list you play will also matter.

By playing no flyers, you get more points for other stuff, so use that advantage to your benefit.

Gotcha thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear that.

They have also introduced Heavy Flyers, which do not get Nimble and the usual automatic boost to Speed 10. So far only new models get this rule, but it is expected to apply to all dragon type big things come 3rd edition.
