If i have a tarantula with HB what happens if targetting gets to the closest enemy unit and the closest enemy unit is engaged in combat?

You cry because Forgeworld rules are bad, and it results in the Tarantula being unable to fire because it can't legally shoot the closest unit.

Or you target the closest viable target using your common sense stratagem.

That's why we also modify before re-rolls and don't let pistols shoot planes, right? The rules are what the rules are. If you want to make house rules, go ahead, but YMDC is not for house rules.

Yeah, I think your hoping for an outbreak of common sense, otherwise you'll have to target the closest unit even if you cant actuall shoot at it.
Cheers

Ymdc is for rules discussion. That was clearly a HIWPI reply from myself. Because I think some people come here asking for advice on how to have a game of 40k and for help when they are stuck.

So next time say " HIWPI <incorrect rules> despite <correct rules>. Your post was condescending, implying that people who play by the rules are somehow inferior.

Seems pretty obvious to me. The core rules state that you may not fire at enemy units engaged in CC with your unit, therefore the auto targeting targets the enemy you CAN fire at, within shooting range.

Except that isn't what the rule says. Automated Artillery: If this model has a twin heavy bolter, it will automatically shoot at the nearest enemy INFANTRY unit in the Shooting phase within range. If this model has a twin lascannon, it will automatically shoot at the nearest non-INFANTRY model in the Shooting phase within range. If there are none of the specified types of unit in range then the closest unit of any kind must be targeted, however in all cases this model may only shoot at an enemy CHARACTER if it is the closest model of any type
If it ever shoots at anything except the "nearest enemy INFANTRY", "nearest non-INFANTRY" or "closest unit of any kind" it's breaking its rule. There is no exception for the closest unit being unable to be shot at.

His post was very clearly a HIWPI response.

You could always request a page reference. I think it was clearly HIWPI, but a polite way to confirm would be to ask for a page reference, or to just ask.
As for HIWPI, I would ask my opponent if they were ok with treating the rules as the closest “viable” target. This would exclude models in CC or models that are out of LoS. I believe that would be the intent. The Tarantula is programmed to shoot at things, not hold its fire while something is hiding nearby... shoot the things you can see!
Unless it’s majorly undercosted, I think most opponents would agree to that.

The faq changed the end of BCB quote
Page 29 – Tarantula Battery, Automated Artillery
Change the penultimate sentence to read:
‘If there are none of the specified types of unit in range
or line of sight, the closest visible enemy unit of any kind
must be targeted.’
It was the must be targetted I wasnt sure whether that overrulled the normal restrictions on targetting due to the must.
However asumed it was meant to work like great big tree suggests but that RAW it must target a unit it cant so wont fire
