Hi folks.

I've been painting in the hobby now for a while just using brushes and the odd rattle can. I am now tempted by airbrushing, but was wondering if there was any current threads on this or any recommendations on compressors and airbrushes. Many thanks

It depends on your personal circumstances. For example, if you're in an apartment where you can't make too much noise, you'd want a more expensive, small quiet compressor. OTOH, if you have your own garage, you can get a cheaper, noisier one. If you do other hobbies, you could consider a compressor suitable for other tool use in addition. Just remember you want a regulator, so you can control pressure, and a moisture trap to keep the water out of your air-line.

Airbrush wise, I'd recommend any major name brand with a dual action, gravity feed. You can get cheapo knock-offs for a fraction, but you're rolling the dice on quality.

There is a site I got my first big kit from:
https://www.everythingairbrush.com/
They were helpful with the couple of queries I had (did everything go together), and the postage was cheaper than most other ways.

Your first brush is not as important as the compressor (with air-tank, if you can). A good compressor will power a good brush once you have wrecked your first one learning how to use it.

As mentioned though, noise can be an issue.

You can get cheap airbrushes for 20-30 gbp. I'd recommend getting one of these to start. I got mine (a cheap chinese fengda) from my dad who bought it for odd jobs. But it works fine and is ideal for beginners and casual users learning the basics of blending, preshading, weathering etc. If you decide to get more serious then you could step up and go for a premium brand.
