Hey all,

A friend of mine said smite was nerfed for thousand sons and grey knights, in order to compensate for the fact smite casting doesn't escalate for them. He reckons their smite now only does 1 mortal wound or something.

However I can't find this anywhere in errata or FAQ. Any help?

Your friend is wrong. Tsons can still smite without penalty, and GK smite is unchanged as well.

He is mostly incorrect. From the beginning of 8th, there have been psykers in both KSons and GK that only do a single mortal wound with smite; this would be the Aspiring Sorcerer and the Scarab Occult Sorcerer in the KSons list and everyone that isn't targeting a demon in GK. Later, the increasing difficulty of casting smite was added to diminish the power of super cheap psykers that certain armies were running just to spam out smite; later than that, it was decided that this really sucked for the psychic marine factions, since they both run units that are costed around the assumption they can do a 1-damage smite every turn. As such, an exception to the rule was made, tied to their Chapter Tactic/Legion trait so that they do not suffer the stacking penalty to smite.

Note that, while all GK psykers have the mini-smite, the HQ (and the Tzaangor Shaman) Sorcerers in the KSons list all use the normal, fully powered d3 mortal wound smite. They still can use smite as much as they want without making it more difficult for the next psyker to cast smite. And thus, the Thousand Sons Characters + Chaos mook screen list was born.
