Just bought the box to go with my 1k Sons, but unsure best way to go. Army as it stands consists of 40 Rubrics, 5 Terminators, 3 Exalted Sorcerers, Ahriman, Magnus, Las pred, Autocannon Pred, and a Rhino. Part of me thinks some close combat will help as apart from Magnus, nothing is really strong in combat. So question is forge or mauler?

The Maulerfiend can be fairly disruptive if left alone given that it's a large assault model with the tools to do damage to both infantry and vehicles, while the Forgefiend kinda just shoots stuff and doesn't do a much better job of it than the preds you already have. Neither model is terribly competitive, but since the Maulerfiend is harder for your opponent to ignore than the Forgefiend then I think the Maulerfiend will get more value in most cases.

I also vote Maulerfiend, for all the same reasons and also because it looks cooler than the Forgefiend, IMO.

Send the Maulerfiend in knowing it will die. It's a distraction carnifex. Your opponent can't ignore it because it will rampage into their lines quickly and mess with their plans. If they're shooting at it, they're not shooting at your Predator, which can then target their shooting units in your turn to then protect your troops as you go for objectives.

I'd vote for the Maulerfiend out of the two considering what else you have.
It forces them to deal with it or it can seriously mess up their lines. Go with Lasher tendrils over the cutters for the extra 6 attacks at -2AP D2.

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.
To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Something to think about for 1ksons players is how much more Maulerfiends interact with the army. Maulerfiends can be buffed by Vortex Beasts and psychic powers. A few buffs and demonforge strat can make the mauler into quite a threat.

I like the maulerfiend myself, it buffs up from so many different places to make itself a threat and can be hard to kill. I run one with my defiler and mutalith vortex as a triple threat.
But the forgefiend can be quite effective as well, it can put out a lot of shots that can be quite effective (ectoplasma cannons can do a lot of work vs the right targets) and can be just as effective due to not needing to get so close to start getting use. I run mine with hades and all it needs is either prescience or the strat to be useful. Anything light armor high wounds hates it (terminators, bikers, sentinals, raiders, venoms, ect.....). Its all about do you have something that can fill that roll better?

The Forgefiend can also benefit from flickering flames and daemonforge, making it a decent AT platform. I still voted maulerfiend though.
