Subject: Night Lords Scavenger Renegades & Terminator Captain
Night Lords scavenger Squad with Terminator Captain
Just finished another commander and infantry unit for my Skin-Thieves Night Lords renegades...
I had some late 1st edition/2nd edition imperial space marines and added some flesh. I like to imagine that this unit has fairly recently looted some loyalist imperial gear before repainting it in the legions colors. To get this effect I decided to pretty much leave most of the base models as they were - imperial eagles are still present in some areas, The legion badges are painted on rather than baroque sculpted designs, while others I have covered in more flesh.
The Commander is Night Lords Captain Xephor Venthis. His model is another favorite of mine from the Rogue Trader Era. I have converted him a bit, opting to use modern chaos arms with Night Lords legion shoulders and sculpted some fur pelt on his arms, back and shoulders. I also painted his arms to have “Flesh Gloves” kind of like some of the Forge world Night Raptors models. His Lightning claws were inspired by the Predator and the “Claws of the Black Hunt” in the 8th edition codex. I just gave him a bolt pistol for fun lol.
Well, that’s about it for now... thanks for checking them out!

@RotGut: Thanks! That’s very humbling! Lol I’m very proud of the Captain too and always had a soft spot for the old Chaos Marine Terminators.
@youidiotkid: thank you! I don’t have any tutorials but I suppose I can shed some light on my process.
I paint in a very relaxed fashion (model painting is a great stress reliever for me) so while I typically use the same techniques, I approach each model or unit differently each time I do it. That said, I use brush-on black primer for all my models. After applying my base layers I use a lot of washing and glazing to get my shades while also mixing many brighter colors into my base mixes.
A good example is with the red areas, such as the eyes and legion badges on the terminator. I use a dark brown color and slowly build up to a bright red by mixing red into that base color then bright red, then orange and finally white into the mix (sometimes I’ll use yellow or even pale flesh tones if I don’t want the white to mute the color too much) - adding each layer after each mix and continuing into the highlights - I’ll also add a glaze in between some layers if i really want the shades to be harsher. Many times if I feel like something is too bright, I’ll glaze over it with one of my washes (usually a light or dark brown, purple or red wash depending on how warm I want the colors to be). After that I tend to re-paint some highlighted areas that might be too dark and add some dry brushing here and there for extreme highlights. I hope this helps!
