I know this thread has likely been done before but I haven't seen a recent one.
What books do you recommend for peolle to start reading 40k novels with?
I have to start with "15 hours". The characters are all human, all IG, all relatable. It makes the 40k universe very understandable to anyone.
Titanicus. This book has normal human guardsmen, Titan crews, tankers and civilians. It gives you a good look at multiple sides of the 40k universe all the way from common foot soldiers to titan crews.
Lord of the Night. A good look at the 40k universe thru the eyes of a chaos marine. Also reminds us csm started out human too.
Those are 3 i'd recommend for a newbie to start reading 40k books.

I recommend they skip Black Library entirely and read the Siege of Vraks and the Taros Campaign books from Forge World.

Gaunt's Ghosts is very easy to get invested in for the meatgrinder eternal war side of 40k.
Daily life of 40k I would go with Enforcer or Eisenhorn/Ravenor.
Xenos side go with Path of the Eldar.

A short story compilation.
It will give you a better idea of what kind of factions and authors interest you. Many of the stories will even be spin offs of existing series, with characters you can read more about.
Let the Galaxy Burn (edited by Christian Dunn and Marc Gascoigne) is a personal favorite. The short story compilation, not the Horus Heresy novel of the same name.
