During a local game I was informed by someone who couldn't produce solid evidence that my Deathwatch veteran marines didn't have the ability to select both the Boltgun and Chainsword options simultaneously.
Their claim was that the lists are separate thus it should be either 2 single handed weapons, or 1 two handed weapon.
I believe my opponent is incorrect but, I couldn't find solid information during my research either. In the Space Marine codex we see that a tactical squad has been given a Boltgun and a Bolt pistol as standard gear. While the codex are different factions they are laid out in a similar fashion ( Deathwatch and Space Marines) with their war gear section.

TLDR The Deathwatch veteran rules say select up to two options from the war gear list by replacing a Boltgun. Can I take a Boltgun and Chainsword (or any other single handed weapon alongside my two handed weapon selection)?

Please help us dissolve this

You're fine. Those two lists are both apart of the Deathwatch equipment list, which the data sheet says you can take two items from. That restriction saying that only one item from the second list just stops you from having two boltguns or something. So only one item for that sub-list, but still two items total.

Yes, that's perfectly fine. The option says you may replace your boltgun with two items from the list. In fact, you're FORCED to take two items, it's not "up to two", it's exactly two.

The added restriction on the list itself is to prevent you swapping a Boltgun for, say, Two Boltguns, or Two Combi-Weapons, you get either two "one-handed" weapons, or one "two-handed" weapon and one "one-handed weapon".

Broken Sig Disclaimer: My YMDC answers are from a "What the rules, as written (or modified by Special Snowflake FAQ) in the rulebooks, actually say" perspective, not a "What I wish the rules said" perspective.
