Hey guys,
Looking at grabbing a Kill Team box for christmas, was looking to get the starter set, but myself and the guys I would be playing with would likely not use the armies provided, and the other expansions such as the Mechanicus one and the Shipyard looking one, appeal to me alot more. Apart from the main rules, what else would I need on top of an expansion, apart from a box with a specific army and dice.

Realistically, if you've got rules, dice and models, you can play.
Obviously stuff like purpose made terrain is gonna make it a bit more thematic, but there's zero stopping you from playing so long as you've got the basics covered.

Awesome, I was wondering if the tactics cards and all that sort of stuff was needed, or if it was more or less like the Datacards in 40k.

The base tactics are contained in the rulebook. The tactics cards in the individual faction expansions add to those, but my advice is to save yourself the money and just print your own (the rules are easily available with a smidge of looking).
You lose a little bit of functionality without them, but the game is fully playable either way.

There is nothing in the starter box that it exclusively contained in it to play Kill Team. It is a better value if you want the rulebook, counters, a squad of Skitarii, a squad of genestealer cultists, some terrain and a board. But all you really need to play Kill Team is the rulebook.
The rulebook can be purchased separately and includes 16 factions to build your roster/list. The Kill Team faction starters are just a sprue of the featured faction units (usually a troop choice), a bit of terrain, counters, tactic cards, a pamphlet on background a particular kill team and the unit cards for that kill team. Slightly more expensive starters also include faction dice.
The faction starter boxes are a bit of a mixed bag to me. Some faction basic troop box is quite a bit cheaper like Necrons. So if the terrain, cards and tokens doesn't interest you, you might be better of just buying a regular box of Immortals/Deathmarks instead. Especially since you will need something like a box of Necron warriors to actually field a 100 point list. The starters strangely also don't feature blank unit cards.
At the same time, the Tau starter is only a little more expensive that a basic box of fire warriors so much easier to pick up even if you did really need the terrain that comes with it. So I guess research what infantry box makes the Kill Team starter and decide for yourself if the starter is worth it or not.
I am looking to start a Necron kill team, and I would have much rather the necrons be a box of immortals and warriors to give me a full team rather than a bit of the Wall of Martyrs. So instead since I already have tokens from the starter, I think I am just going to buy a box of warriors and a box of immortals then convert a couple of warriors into flayed ones.

I sarted playing Kill Team without buying the starter set. All you need are models, the rulebook and terrain. You can print your own tokens or buy the tokens separately from ebay bits sellers if you like, or just not use them if you can keep things straight in your head.
I highly recommend the Kill Team Manager app for Android and iOS, when you build a list you can export it to PDF and it will include all tactics and abilities available to that list. It's extremely helpful to get everything consolidated into one place.
But yeah, if you don't care about the models or terrain in the starter set then nothing is stopping you from buying or using the models you want and building your own terrain or using whatever you have already.

Yeah, the only thing exclusive to the box is a few tactics cards for AdMech and Genestealer Cults, but if you're not playing those factions don't worry about it, and the text of the cards is certainly not hard to find online.

Will probably pick up one of the expansions eventually for the terrain, as they are good value for money to be fair.
But cheers for the advice on the app, definitely noted. Gonna grab the rulebook soon, gives me chance to give it a crack over christmas! Cheers fellas
