I just realized that as written ONLY a necron destroyer lord can take a phylactery.

Please tel me this was a goof that's been corrected somewhere...

Nope. It's because only the Destroyer Lord comes with a phylactery part. It makes absolutely no sense.

Sadly you are not mistaken

fully customizable Overlords is something I miss the most from 5th

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Wait, do they?

Which part of the Destroyer Lord is the Phylactery?

It's the clenched fist with the wrist band thing.

Huh. I never once realised that that was supposed to be a Phylactery.

For some reason I always thought that a Phylactery would be in the middle of their chest (where the Necron symbol is).

You'd think so, but the destroyer lord has it on his wrist.

I wish they wouldn't let someone who clearly hates necron players write the codex for necrons...

At any rate, I really hate this thing the 8th edition codices have whereby the only customisation for most characters is via Artefacts.

(Or, in the case of Dark Eldar, the only customisation *and* the only way to get a HQ that isn't utterly abysmal.)

Surely there's got to be some non-weapon equipment that's not the only one of its kind in the universe?

It's doubly weird because the WYSIWIG rules appear to have been removed from the rulebook - so it's not even as if you're required to represent all equipment on a model anymore.

What's really weird is that this no-equipment-in-box-no-rules thing is inconsistent.
Ok, so you can't give an Overlord a phylactery because it doesn't come in the set, but you can give him a void blade or a hyperphase sword...which doesn't come in the set. Its a stupid policy that doesn't make sense, and the list building in 8th ed can't hold a candle to earlier editions.

I agree entirely.

I also despise it when only special characters are allowed interesting rules and wargear.
