I'm seriously thinking of starting a genestealer cult army as I love their lore. I know most answers to this will be wAit for the codex but what are units you think (baring major change) are must have units.

You will need lots of basic troops no matter what, get 4-5 boxes at least (neophytes), at least 2 boxes genestealers, the HQ's, 1 of each for now for sure, but Primus and Magus are really good, might get 2 of those, some abberants, and finally a couple transports. This should get you to 1k i think.

Edit: 2 Battalions are easy to do, but you will need more Neophyte or hybrid boxes

A couple boxes each of neophytes/acolytes/aberrants and the HQ box will have you set for things to assemble and work on a color scheme. You don’t really want to go hog on the purchases til you know what the codex looks like. If you can, try and hop on deals from Tooth and Claw and Kill Team starters to get your dudes, much cheaper that way. There’s no rush since everyone’s waiting.

I'd more or less suggest what the others have. Focus on core units like Troops and HQ models for now and look towards filling out the other things post-codex. Aberrants and Goliath Trucks are also worth considering if you want to make use of either of the specialist detachment stratagems provided in Vigilus Defiant as well. Aberrants are a fairly safe choice anyway since they received a pre-codex update in Tooth and Claw, while Goliaths are probably the safest transport option since we don't know what the codex will do with our Astra Militarum hand-me-downs.

If you want an overview of the faction, you could check out the faction primer in the GSC tactics thread.
