I admit that I also have no idea what you're looking for here. I play an Imperial Fists 5th Company force that has nothing to do with what's good. I have about 1000pts total and play some combination of:
- Tactical marines x15
- Devastator marines with 2x plasma cannons or 2x heavy meltas; sometimes as part of tac squades
- Razor back or Rhino
- Dreadnought
- Various elites such as apothecaries and ancients
- Various HQs such as standard chaplains, terminator chaplains, terminator libarians, and standard librarians. And one unpainted captain.
- A five-man assault squad

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.

EDIT: There's a bunch more new ones post Vigilus and CA2018, I can post those too. Link in my sig to the entire superheavy tank regiment army list, organized by company. The points total there (as well as the units available) can give an idea of how I build lists from that regiment.

This week I'm replacing the plague drones with a Thousand Sons Daemon Prince and Spawn in an outrider, and adding a Myphitic Blight hauler. So many good powers open up to them with a Thousand Sons caster, even if its fluff abomination. Give the Prince the Helm of the Third Eye relic and steal opponents CPs on a 5+.

My Deathwatch are my only army that really functions in 8e; the lists tend to start from three Primaris Kill-Teams (5 Intercessors/2-3 Hellblasters/1 Aggressor), three standard Kill-Teams (5-7 models, 1-2 storm shields, 1-2 frag cannons and storm bolters on everyone else), three lascannon razorbacks, a Watch-Master, and either a Dominus Aegis Captain or a Librarian; that comes to about 1,200pts and the rest get used on Blackstars, Dreadnaughts, Reivers, and/or Bikes depending on what I feel like using that day. Sometimes I field a small AdMech detachment of fifteen Rangers and two Onagers as part of the excess.
Taurox prime
- gatling cannon
- hot shot volley guns

It's done very well for me so far. The theory is that I can outshoot anyone who wants to shoot me, and being Mordian, my overwatch is almost as scary as my regular shooting turn is. I need to calculate points again for CA18, as that list was from before.
( The guys I play with usually do 2 vs 2 Adepticon team style games, hence only being 1000 points )
EDIT: Damn, it's over now. I guess I'll have to drop a taurox and the lord commissar and add another infantry squad and company commander. Should just barely fit if I also get rid of the bolt pistol.

I only play narrative campaign games, so my armies are often designed based on a scenario, and not strength of competitiveness. For instance, my 2,000 point game the other day was:
1x Farseer on Bike
1x Farseer on Foot
2x Spiritseers
3x 5-Man Rangers
2x 10-Man Dire Avengers
1x 20-Man Guardian w/ two platforms
2x Wave Serpents
1x Fire Prism
2x War Walkers
1x 5-Man Shining Spears
2x Hornets
_____________
So, not competitive, but all mounted in vehicles or deepstriking/flanking (Guardians webway'ed in) ---- as my army was responding to a desolate location being defended by Dark Angels. I have 6000+ points for my armies, so I don't have a "list" like some people might. I play different armies every game.

I’m mostly playing games at home vs. The Boy, so tend towards the casual side. Also, only painted WYSWYG units hit the board.
Fist pic is me trying to get as much of my 2018 fresh paint onto the field before I moved the YTD painting shelf over to the normal shelf. Plus some older stuff that I’ve not used in a while and classics to round out the list Second list is fairly standard fare for my Eldar. Mechanized. This was the first outing of the scytheguard. Last list was a themed list from when I finished my repulsor. A fast moving force of grav armor and jump troops striking deep into enemy territory.

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!" Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.
I write a different list every game. Usually I'll take whatever I feel like at the time. Now with traits I usually try a trait I haven't used before and build an army around it.

What's going on with the Guard? Command Points, and a desire to use the new Vigilus Defiant artillery formation, because Katherine <3 artillery. I'm sure once the novelty wears off I'll probably drop the artillery for Exorcists, but I'll probably keep the 2 Battalions for the sake of having 10 [16, including regen] Command Points. Loyal 64!
Space Wolves
Spoiler:
I forgot what it was precisely, since I last played it several months ago. However, it was Wolves + DA, because I was trying to leverage Lion and the Wolf and Weapons of the Dark Ages. It was mostly foot marines and specialists with high special weapon density, plus like max allotment of HQ's, and was strictly okay. Next list might be the Twilight Saga + the loyal 32 instead of Wolves+DA, because I wasn't really able to threaten the enemy armor to a sufficient degree with massed plasmaguns, especially because my enemy was Alpha Legion and it was hard to get within 12" on foot. I needed to be faster, because while I posed a significant threat to his infantry and was hard to dislodge from cover, camping in cover wasn't killing Predators.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!
This is what I am currently running for my Necrons.
Not a huge fan of the Necrons Troops and many of the characters, and the points drops that many of the vehicles received in Chapter Approved 2018 have motivated me to shift from an mixed list to something that focuses almost exclusively on Quantum Shielded units.
Mostly a casual/narrative meta. If want to make the list slightly more competitive depending on my opponent, I will end up swapping both Tomb Sentinels for 6 more Destroyers.

My current Dark Angels list I've been working with is Azrael, a Talonmaster, an Ancient, and a Darkshroud surrounded by two squads of Hellblasters, with some Scout Bikes to grab objectives and a Dark Talon to thin hordes out. I also run a Librarian for the -1 to hit spells. Scouts are in it also as a troop tax and to hold mid-field objectives (until they inevitably die). I've been thinking of moving to a more mobile setup with Sammael, a Talonmaster, a big unit of plasma Inceptors, and for some CC power I would take a Space Wolves Supreme Command detachment with a couple of Wolf Lords and a Rune Priest (for the spells). Haven't had a chance to try that one out yet.
My most recent Tau list was 2 Battalions consisting of minimum units of Fire Warriors, 3 Riptides, a unit of 3 Broadsides, 3 medium units of Shield Drones, a quad fusion Coldstar, 2 Cadre Fireblades, an Ethereal, and Darkstrider. All T'au Sept, of course, because overwatching on 5's is awesome against things like Orks. With the points drops from CA, I could probably put the Ethereal in a Vanguard with 3 Firesight Marksmen and make them Sa'cea Sept to allow them to reroll their Markerlights. Or just take more Shield Drones and/or Fire Warriors. Or even drop one of the Fireblades for a second Commander.
As for my Chaos army, I haven't run them in so long I'm not sure how I would use them these days. I don't have any Tzaangors or Bloodletters to do the super melee blobs, and Cultists aren't as good since they cost more points now (although I do have quite a few of them). I also lack enough Plaguebearers to run a good Nurgle horde. If I were to go back to actively playing Chaos with just what I currently own, I'd probably have a small Battalion of Daemons (3 Nurgling units with a Poxbringer and Slaanesh Herald), along with a Death Guard Outrider (Prince, 2 Spitter Drones, and a unit of 3 Blight Haulers) and a CSM Battalion (for Obliterators, Cultists, and/or Khorne Berzerkers). I might change things up to allow me to run Mortarion although he's not top tier competitive in a meta where Knights are something lists have to be prepared for.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Each Batallion has an overall purpose, except for the Hellhound that joins the Tallarns, it’s just a more effective way to run it. The Catachans provide long range fire, the Tallarns move to take central objectives, and the MT drop on distant objectives, ideally, or are used to hit priority targets as needed.
for funzies ignoring the rule of three iv been toying with the idea of running Zarakynel, 2 winged daemon princes, 2 standard daemon princes, and 4 keeper of secrets
mostly becuase its far too annoying to take out and use 90+ daemonettes and 20+ seekers and put them back.

3x Doom Scythes; how do you find they compare taking the place of Doomsday Arks?
Well, the Doom Scythes are awesome.
I use two Triach Stalkers to mark two enemy tanks and then the DS can do their work eventually with the Sautek stratagem.
Doomsday Arks are better point for point as pfreak5 pointed out. But I can't stand the models.

Interesting infantry horde! How well do you find it plays? What does your local meta look like?
It's about as 'Anvil' as I can make the army to be honest, and it's how I've been playing the army since 5th.
- The aggressive Warriors backed up by the Tesla Immortals is still a pretty solid setup that is doing well. The Tomb Blades are cheap and provide a decent enough distraction to force my opponent to spread his shots. Finding the points to upgrade to Gauss is easy enough and I can see the advantages of that in a Mephrit list, but I have the old 'Lawn Chair' Destroyers that I use as my TB's, so I stick with that.
- The Chronoteks provide the blanket 5++. I forgot to add in that the Overlord has an Orb which has helped out a ton, and only gets used on Warriors. I agree that it's not very useful in most Necron lists but surviving that first turn shooting and getting more Warriors back has been more than worth the cost of the 2 Warriors to bring. I don't think I'd use it in a non-warrior based list.
- Flayed Ones are still one of the best Assault units, but the repeated Nerf's to game Mechanics have made them incredibly frustrating to use as my opponent gets to ignore them for 2-3 turns where it's too late for them to do anything. Only thing I miss about them from before was 'Infiltrate' and feel that all they need is that free move before the game starts, like the other armies got when they took away their deployment. I had a good Nephrekh setup with them at the start of 8th that was pretty brutal. The 1st turn DS in DZ and now T2 period have been the biggest hits, with the VoD/MWBD being the nail in that coffin. The Ress Orb has had the opportunity to help these guys as well, but bringing back shooting in a Mephrit list has been the better option.
- It suffers all of the other problems Necrons have outside of that. The list does MUCH better when it's trimmed down for smaller games where it's more difficult for my opponent to pick a unit and kill it until it's dead. As the games get larger, there isn't much of an advantage to being a Necron player. The new missions have helped a ton, but only have 2 games under my belt with them. It's not easy for my opponent to get First Strike, losing units won't lose you the game, and the larger units remain decent scoring units. It really comes down to how much damage my opponent does in the first or second turn for beta strike stuff.
Most of the Local Meta is ITC. So it's difficult to get a game in, especially when I prefer Maelstrom missions. Add in that I work 2 jobs, one at a FLGS, and spending most of my time there teaching the newer players my Necrons rarely see much table time. I currently have 6 armies. My Primaris Marines are the ones I use to teach the game and they're my current project. So I can't really give you an honest answer to your last question. Just when asked to play my Necrons, I usually play this list or some paired down version of it. I have a 'bank' of pre-made lists for various point values all based off this list. The 500pt list is REALLY good, my best games are in the 1200-1500 point range. Over that, it starts to feel like a normal army where you just gotta take your losses.
