Hello fellow Dakkaites,

A couple days ago, I saw an Onion style article entitled "Hopelessly optimistic Warhammer player makes new years resolution to finish painting all his figures." I had a good laugh, as I have made this resolution before and failed miserably, of course, and I shared it with a few friends. (Link spoilered below for those interested).

Anyway, I had the good fortune this Christmas to actually receive everything I asked for from my folks, wife, etc. that was on my gift list. While I was delighted to get a bunch of new kits (a great surprise as my wife is not a fan of my Warhammer hobby and usually refuses to buy me anything gaming related), I had been feeling a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work I have ahead. I am not the fastest painter, and I have two young kids and run my own business, so I don't have a ton of time to paint, although I almost always set aside at least 30-60 minutes per day for hobby time/self care (you need it when you have young kids, believe me).

In the end, the article actually inspired me to make a real go of clearing the backlog on my table of shame. I am therefore stating publicly that I will follow the below set of rules, and if anyone who wishes to join me, I would be pleased to have your company. My goal here is to hold myself publicly accountable for fulfilling this challenge. Without further ado...

Until June 30, 2019, or the backlog has been cleared:

1. I will paint only models/terrain that have been in my possession, fully-built and primed, for more than 6 months as of 1/1/19.

2. I will not assemble any new models that are currently on the sprue, unless one of the following conditions is true:

(a) I have completed half or more of the projects listed below, and the kit I am planning to build is also one that I have had sitting on the shelf for at least 6 months as of 1/1/18 (e.g. the Yncarne); or

(b) the kit I am planning to build is a gift for someone else.

3. I will not purchase any new models until June 30, 2018 or until the backlog has been cleared, unless the models are a gift for someone outside of my immediate family.

4. Exceptions:

(a) in each batch of models I am painting, if the number of models remaining to be painted that are older than 6 months is too small to paint efficiently, 1-3 models that are fully built and primed may be added to the batch if doing so will improve batch painting efficiency. For example, if I only had 4 genestealer cultists remaining to be painted who were >6 months, and another group of cultists that were less than 6 months old but still ready to go, then I could add 2 or 3 more to the group to get to a more ideal number for batch painting.

(b) if my kids ask me to paint or build any of their models, the rules above do not apply.

(c) none of these rules apply to the purchase of GW rule books, White Dwarf, painting supplies or any other gaming accessories (e.g. Genestealer Cults tactical objectives/stratagem cards, whenever they come out).

5. As I complete each batch of models, I will post a picture here.

My current project is a Dark Eldar Raider, so I will post it when it is done (I am painting it in the classic GW scheme because I am very partial to it). Within the last month, I have also recently completed 3 other projects that would qualify for this resolution. I painted a set of 3 Hive Guard I got last March, a set of Dark Reapers I got for Christmas in 2017, and a couple of 2nd edition genestealers I had been meaning to repaint since approximately 2013 , which I combined with the 2 genestealer familiars from the Deathwatch Overkill box (had those guys for a few years as well) and the Abominant from Tooth and Claw, which I rationalized adding because I figured doing the familiar on his base at the same time as the other familiars gives me a little extra efficiency. I will hopefully post those guys in a bit as well.

Spoilered below is a list of the various models/terrain I have which are eligible for painting under these rules as of 1/1/19

Spoiler:

Tyranids - many of these models have been sitting around for multiple years after I got bored with my original 40k army and moved on to other things.

-Hormagaunts x7 - Completed!
-Tyranid Warriors x3
-Tyranid Broodlord
-Genestealers x4

Space Marine Dreadnought

Harlequins:

-Troupers x 10

Dark Eldar:

-Archon

Genestealer Cults:

-Autogun Neophytes x6 (3 completed)
-Shotgun Neophytes x1 (completed)
-Heavy Weapon Neophytes x3 (2 completed)
-Special Weapon Neophytes x3 (1 completed)

Terrain:

-Firestorn Redoubt
-Forgeworld Realm of Battle - Cityscape Concourse (for next year's armies on parade)
-Custom Ryza Pattern Ruins terrain piece

Whew! That was actually kind of a lot. That should keep my going for a while there. If I succeed in keeping this resolution, I will buy into those sweet new GSC bikers once I'm done.

So I've made a bit of progress on this project.

The Drukhari Raider is complete, although I may still add some more crew later. For now, the gunner and pilot will have to suffice.

Spoiler:

The Abominant I was working on alongside the genestealers/familiars is also complete. This was a really fun model to paint. The photo could be a little better, but unfortunately I am terrible with cameras of all sorts.

Spoiler:

As previously stated, I also finished a trio of Hive Guard and some Dark Reapers as part of this challenge.

Spoiler:

Finally, I painted a Primaris Captain for my son for his birthday. He has named him "Captain Strong," which I find hilarious.

Spoiler:

I am also wrapping up 7 genestealer neophytes. I have painted about 50 of these models, but they are still some of my favorites. I can assembly-line paint them over just a couple days now, as I have my scheme down to a science. I will be posting them soon.

In other news, I am making some adjustments to the list I posted before for my own sanity. I originally inclined a dozen or so Space Marine minis as among my pile of shame, but realistically, I am never going to play an imperial army (#xenos4life) and any time spent on them is wasted. If my son asks me to paint them eventually, I will, but I am booting them from the list in favor of models that I actually care about and might conceivably use in a game some day. I am also feeling sorely tempted by the new genestealer cult models that are coming out in the next month or so. I can wait on the bikes, but those character models are amazing. It will be very hard to resist the urge to buy some of those when they come up.

Next step, I'm thinking I will paint the Firestorm Redoubt. It has been a long time since I did a substantial terrain project, and it could be a nice change of pace. I'm actually feeling pretty good about this project right now, although I'm not sure how well I'm going to stick to my "contract." I guess we'll see.

I completed 7 of the genestealer neophytes a few days ago, and then followed that up with 7 Hormagaunts. I’m feeling pretty good about both sets of models, will post photos later. I have also been working on the turrets for my anti-air battery, which are coming along nicely. I have converted the redoubt into a genestealer cult bunker (a project I started last year when my genestealer cult army kept getting tabled by armies with lots of Eldar flyers). This will add to my growing collection of genestealer cult themed terrain.. I’m going to break this project up a bit, as it can be a bit tiresome to do a large terrain project in one go. Will probably do the archon and some raider crew as a side project in between working on the terrain piece.

On a less happy (but still pretty happy) note, these upcoming genestealer cult releases look very likely to derail my resolution...

This is nice work so far! You're making good progress, and honestly with any new years resolution i think that's the main thing to focus on, rather than the end.

And Captain Strong is an excellent name.

realism is a lie

Thanks! I rather like Captain Strong too. Just add some faux Latin first name (Tiberius? Honorious?) and it could be a real GW name.

Looking for tabletop quality for the most part with the majority of these guys, as the majority of them are horde infantry. Happy to be knocking out models at this pace, as I was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with the backlog.

Well, I completely blew this resolution. Genestealer cults were my downfall. I ended up buying the entire release.

I have done pretty well on completing the models on the list, but still have a few left. I completed the Tyranid Warriors, Hormagaunts, Archon, all the neophytes and the Firestorm Redoubt.

Left to complete are the Dreadnought, Broodlord, Genestealers and terrain. The Harlequins are not really on the list anymore. I have too many other things I want to paint.
