I started to work on my Crucible Guard and realized my tan color for my uniforms made my combat alchemists look like they're wearing cartoonish hazmat suits. So rather that starting over I've decided to roll with it. Only thing is I have no idea how to go about making the boots and gloves look like they're made with heavy black rubber. Anyone know of a good tutorial or method to achieve this look?

I like to use a couple of colors from Secret Weapons Miniatures for this kind of thing. They have a color called Tyre Black, which is a weird, rubbery off-black. Then they have a color called Rubber, which is exactly what it sounds like. I usually base an area that I want to look "rubbery" in the Tyre Black, then heavily highlight with Rubber, give it a black wash for some depth, then highlight back up with either Rubber or a Space Wolves grey type color.

IIRC iv seen rubber hoses done in a dark blue green such as P3 coal black you could also do it with brown black/grey like highlighting with skavenblight dinge

looking at most rubber gloves it can be almost any level of shine so i think its going to come down to what you want.

super shiny you could just paint black and extreme highlight the edges up to white, or make it worn which would be mostly grey.

looking at GW GSC their rubber boots look to be mostly black highlighted grey. as well.

Black with gloss varnish painted on after sealing would shine those suckas right up.

Tends to look awful, though, when the rest of the model is painted nicely.

Nothing stops you from painting the boots with highlights, but if you want them to look shiny, glossing them would do the trick.

Gloss varnish wouldn't give a rubber effect at all. Rubber isn't shiny. Rubber is matt, but gives a weird sort of shine.. Almost satin but not. Satin would be better but still just not right really.

I know some scale modellers who airbrush pledge floor care in a light coat over their greyish black to create rubber effect on inflatable dinghys and the like.

For hazmat gloves you could also try dusting a grey powder over them. Our NBC gloves have a grey powdery look to them
