So a black templar captain has 4 attacks
Chapter Tactic - Reroll charges
Grimaldus let's you get an additional attack on a roll of a 6+
Helbrecht gives him +1 strength
Champions of humanity warlord trait gives him +1 to hit and wound against characters
Suffer not the unclean to live strat - +1 attack and rerolling failed wounds
Might of heroes - +1 strength, toughness and attack

With a thunder hammer against a character knight you would be hitting on 2s rerolling with exploding 6s and then wounding on 2s rerolling. So essentially you'll have a minimum of 6 (more likely 7) 3 damage wounds on a knight which would only have a 6+ save.
You could could give him the shield eternal so he's rocking a 3++ and halves damage. You combine this with uphold the honour of the emperor and he will have a 5+++ on top of that. He can also fight when dying or fight twice. It's a lot of CP but if you run a cheap guard brigade or something CP won't be a huge issue.

Alternatively with the teeth of terra would get 6+D3 attacks which blow up on 5s. They would only wound on 4s but you can reroll all the wounds. It's -2 2D so the knight would be getting 5+ saves. The teeth of terror is good at killing infantry better than the thunder hammer.

Is there any other perks I'm missing?

Which load-out would you prefer? Thunder hammer and Shield Eternal? Or Storm Shield and Teeth of Terra?

Thanks

Way less situational is just the formation, it's warlord trait, and the strat. You get 6 attacks that explode on 6s, rerolling 1s to hit and rerolling to wound.

He doesn't have to be your warlord, you can spend the 1cp to just give him the formation WL trait.

Also works great with the teeth.

Good luck getting him to hit the knight though. It will require a very specific set up and a lot to pull off before he can reliably make it.

You can easily have a gunline and make knights like gallants come to you. You can always droppod him and reroll your charge which is semi-reliable. Having your characters in landraiders or just hanging back works, he can be wrecking other things while he waits for the knight to come to him. Against multi knight lists it's pretty easy to clear the chaf in turns one and two so you can get your drop pod in reliably where it needs to be

Teeth of terra seems more multipurpose to me

Grimaldus doesn't work on a TH as it can't roll a 6 to hit.

Bike with hammer and Shield Eternal with Vigilus trait is the way to go IMO. T5, an extra wound and the Shield over Slamguinius but not quite the same output offensively and no Fly.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

The warlord trait gives you +1 to hit characters so you can explode on sixers with Grim

Then you can't take the vigilus trait.

Why would you take the vigilus trait? Grimaldus's aura does the same thing as it except it's not unmodifed. So sixers will give an extra hit to the thunder hammer and 5s and 6s will give an extra hit to the teeth of terra
