Subject: Cheap Alternatives to Games Workshop Terrain/Supplies for Terrain
Hi Guys I've been wondering what you all use for alternatives to their gothic terrain? I am looking a similar style and weight. Additionally what materials do you use for scratch building, where do you get it, and for how much?
Thanks,
Xofox

On the scratch building side, I use foamed PVC. Brand names of PALight or foamex I think. I get offcuts from a nearby plastics supplier for about £1 a sheet, but postage stings a bit.
3mm thickness is fine for construction but you can also work with 2mm and 5mm thicknesses for specific purposes.
Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
Proxie Miniatures have some nice shanty buildings and brick walls.
The walls are walls, very Lego-like you can make all kinds of layouts and ruins. My recent review:
Spoiler:
Just picked up Proxie Miniatures brick walls. He made them for Hero Clix but I see a lot of uses for 40k.
You get 14 walls, each about 1.5"x2" and they fit together Lego-like.
The doorway bit is small but it could work, you can always add battle damage and make it a hole.
The window is a perfect height for a fire port.
The ruined wall actually has a set of bricks that fit perfectly if you want to restore it. Otherwise you have a pile of bricks for dressing up terrain!
I give 5 bricks out of 5!
Now I just need a few hundred propaganda posters to hang on them.
Troublemaker also makes some industrial walls for Epic scale but they work just as well for 28mm, check Vanguard Miniatures for those kits.

For scratch building, plastic card/sheet styrene is what you want, available on Amazon and from fine FLGS and hobby shops. Then you need a sharp knife/scissors to make terrain. Foam core also works for thicker walls. The Maelstrom's Edge Terrain terrain sprue has doors and edges to kit them out.
Plumbing supplies from the hardware store can give you pipes and tanks.

There is basically no limit to what you can scratch build using foam board and card stock. I recently built a 22"x30" gothic cathedral out of foam board, for use with Kill Team. I still have a lot of painting and detailing to do but this is its structure:

If you want plastic gothic terrain, there's also Pegasus hobbies range of gothic stuff.
It's tab/slot construction for the most part. No floors are included for the intact buildings (ruined floor pieces do come with the ruins sets). Tile effect plasticard is available from good hobby stores, though.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

My scratch-builds thus far have been limited in materials to cork, toothpicks, sand and rocks. I get all of them from Dollarama, which I don't think exists in the U.S.A., but you should be able to get them from any dollar store.
Summoning Circles
Statue Garden
I also got a fairly cheap statue of The Motherland Calls! from a Californian company called 3DPrintedDebris, but i) she's massive (10.5" to the hilt of her sword) and ii) probably too specific for most boards.
puppetswar.eu has this
which retails for 70 Euro, or some smaller ruins which all retail at between 25 and 30 Euro.
I use all Mantic terrain. Especially if you are willing to cut into them, melt them, bend them, you can get very diverse and interesting terrain that all fits into a reliable 3" x 3" grid.
No measuring up floors. You know how tall they all are.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Another vote for Pegasus!
Let's just say I'm a fan.

20 bucks at lowes gets you a 10ft by 12ft 1 inch thick insulation foam board. draw shapes on it and cut them out with your standard coping saw for finer detail, keyhole saw for the bigger stuff. BE WARNED:THIS MAKES A HUUUGE MESS, have a shop-vac handy.
hot glue gun is 5 bucks at walmart. stack them as high as you want and glue them together.
spray paint at 5 bucks a can melts the sides and give a rocky feel. you can get some of the rustoleum lawn furniture spray to add rock flecks.
they also sell thinner sheets than 1 inch, you can build buildings out of them. huge pieces run like 15 bucks. i would use a box cutter and a ruler on those bad boys just to contain the mess.
