So today I just found out that all the paints have been renamed. Wtf. Any ideas why? I'm sure there was an explanation in WD but I've been out of the hobby for 10 years. I know things had changed for the better like pretty much everything that was metal is now plastic, but paints ca'mon. I remember great names like Boltgun metal which is now Leadblecher or Blood red which is now Evil sunz scarlet.

So the above is also annoying because I'm getting back into 40k with Deathwatch and I don't have a clue what paints I need just for the Deathwatch colours but also the many chapter shoulder pad colours. Any help will be much appreciated, since I still don't know how much the start up is costing me, models wise I'm fairly sure of what I want but the paints has added another level complexity to this for me.

Thanks in advance.

Is it really a situation? I feel like I'm the only one who buys paints based on looking at the colour with my eyes.

Some people (especially those who follow GW's painting method a-la Duncan style) might also be either inflexible in color-matching, because they don't have that color background, or they simply are unable to tell the (sometimes subtle) differences between colors, and feel more comfortable with the rigidity of the Duncan-method.

How long ago did the paint names change? I don't use anything Citadel except a couple washes so I guess I never noticed.

2012. The Washes changed too, used to be Badab Black and so on, they went over to the Nuln Oil and the rest at the point too.

The name changes are a fall-out result of the Chapterhouse lawsuit that saw GW lose almost half their claims (mostly based around what they COULDN'T copyright).

So, in order to protect their IP, they changed the names for most of the things in their IP to things that they COULD copyright. Like model and army names, paint names, etc.

You might think "Ultramarine blue" would be one that they could keep, but nope. It's an existing widely used colour tone in the paint industry (like Aquamarine, or Cerulean, or Prussian), so it got changed and a whole lot of other "generic unprotectable" names got changed with it. Like blood red.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

GW used 'Ultramarines Blue' instead of Ultramarine Blue.

Not true, the paint renaming happened a few years before GW lost the Chapterhouse lawsuit. Rumor at the time was that GW lawyers had not read the contract carefully enough and actually signed away the ownership of the old names to the paint supplier themselves, who wanted an exorbitant amount of money to renew the contract and "license out" GW's paints to themselves, thinking GW would have to pay since the names were decades old and iconic to the brand. GW instead chose to come out with all-new paints under all-new names.

I don't know if it's at all true, but I still get a kick out of the idea and it made the only kind of sense it could at the time. Otherwise why drop names like "Boltgun Metal", "Space Wolf Grey", "Asurmen Blue" and "Iyanden Darksun"? all of those are perfectly trademarkable already.

Except acrylic paints can DRY a different shade than when wet. For example mephiston red is darker when dry than when wet. Jokero Orange changes shade as well when dry vs wet. There are others. I never trust a color till I've seen it dry.

GW's put out a bunch of tutorials that generally follow either a basecoat -> wash -> highlight, or basecoat -> wash -> rebase -> highlight 1 -> highlight 2 progression. In both cases, specific paints are recommended from GW's line, with no mixing required. It's basically an extension of the old painting tutorials GW used to have in WD, but with the new paint range the technique has been largely standardized, and distributed via Youtube.

So, a lot of players may have learned to paint by following tutorials that call for specific paints and don't involve mixing.
