Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, but I have had success with first spraying the model white, followed up with spraying the model with blood red spray paint, ink washing with Chestnut ink, touching up with blood red paint, and then adding highlights. Doesn't take too much time at all.

I've also heard of just inking washing with chestnut ink over white spray paint, adding blood red paint (not spray paint), and then highlighting.

Hope that helps.

If you want to paint BA fast here is a great method... play them as the Flesh Tearers successor Chapter... they have black and red power armor... so you won't have to paint as much red. Base coat the model in black, then drybrush a dark brown over the areas you wish to be red. Next paint on a dark red followed by a bright red. Finally use red ink to bring out the red and give it that zing you see in all the GW pix. Here are some of my Scouts:

Be carful. Red is not as easy as some think. The trick is not to add white to red or youll get pink. Try adding a bit of brown ink to your base color to add a degree of depth...and wont have to got quite as bright as BloodyT's red if you dont want.

Depth is harder to do with blue ink since improper mixing will give purple...butif your feeling froggy leap-just add very small amounts of blue. I

With browns the fig may have a bit of a clay color but after some suceeding washes of reder-paint this will go away. Careful not to venture into the orange highlight arena either. Red is a slippery slope.

I have no pics but I prefer to start in the maroon color range as my base coat...but I feel this doesnt suit BAs. Good luck.

I have a Blood Angels Successor chapter that i built with the doctrine system, I'm also a Khorne Fantasy fan so I've done a fair bit of red in my time!

Never highlight red with white. It looks awful! Blood red with Salmon pink edging....  urgh.

For me this has always been the best method to get a nice even coat and is reletively fast... fastish.

Undercoat Chaos Black spray

Base coat Scortched Brown

1st layer thinned red gore

2nd layer thinned red gore

3rd layer blood red red gore 50/50

Highlights blood red.

Leave the crack in the armour and any shading Scortched brown. This will give you a more crimson darker red colour that looks more natural than a brilliant bright blood red, orange highlight.

By the way to answer your question orange highlights on red look awful and are not realistic at all. I would avoid them like the plague. I prefer earthy natural and realistic colours to comic book bolds

No problem anytime. I'll see if i can dig out some photos.

Both myself and my mate Dave use this technique or similar variations. We used to work at our local GW store

till recently and painted most of the cabinet models in this way.

Bear in mind that the majority of recent WD painting guides have been awful, and the suggestions in codex books quite frankly dont work or aren't true. Unless you have one of the decent masterclass heavy metal articels (from a year or so back) then disgard what is in WD. The old style step by step and very detailed heavy metal articles were great and we tested them on store models. If followed they do actually work.

However modern White Dwarf goes by the logic that everyone reading is an absolute idiot and has never touched a paint brush before. The rule of the lowest common denominator has really brought down the quality, and yes whilst this is needed to a certain extent it would be much more helpful to have more indepth articles for intermediate and more advanced painters. As I believe no one knows everything! Even experienced painters can learn new methods or tricks, or even just better blends.

Sadly (For UK WD anyway) this is no longer the case. Thats why I think Forums like this one are definately a great resource, and the way forward.
