In the codex and on the 10-man killteam picture on GW there is a blackshield model that carries 2 powerswords, is there any reason to actually do this? There are no rules stating they would get an extra attack, or any other benefit from doing this, does anyone have any information to the contrary?

They came out during 7th edition, where it would grant you an additional attack.
No reason in 8th to do it aside from Rule of Cool.

Could the Sergeant potentially take a Xenophase Blade and Power Sword to use either of the profiles during combat, or is using any of the pistols always a better option?

Xenophase is statwise identical to a power sword sans the reroll invuln rule.

There's no reason to do this. I have my blackshield modeled with a storm shield on his back and two power swords and I run him as a single power sword/storm shield model.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Every one else already answered. No benefit :(
I think there was like a niche argument that this would benefit you for Kill Team due to some weird wording for combat with models that had multiple weapons, but I think that was iffy at best and was eventually resolved in an FAQ.
I really wish double melee weapons provided an extra attack always.

You could always model the black shield with two chainswords for +2 attacks, pretty sure that was faqed to work recently.

Edit: Unless you meant being able to be equipped with two chainswords, in which case, that might be a relatively recent development.

Sorry I meant confirmed to work in a recent rule book faq, rather than faqed to work.
Either way would meet rule of cool to see a blood soaked black shield running around with two chain swords.

To add to the above, it's also yet another example of model before rules. You have one right handed power sword in kit, next to like dozen left handed ones, and by default it can only replace a gun hand (no left handed guns in the box) so unless you borrow bits from another SM kit, literally only thing you can use it for is two sword build...

If you are fighting someone like Jain Zar, who has a special rule that lets her disarm one of your weapons for the round, you can still stab with the other sword.
It’s a tiny, irrelevant, corner case, but if you were traumatized by big hair in the 80’s, you might feel it’s worth the investment.
