hey everyone,

So its been awhile since i primed or painted miniatures and i think i screwed up priming and need some advice. I just primed my 6 imperial guard squads with Army painter skeleton bone primer and they look awful. It looks like a couple of different things may have happened:

1) i put way to much paint on the models. I set up my miniatures to get primed on all 4 sides but the rows were close together so possibly there was a lot of overlap. however i kept seeing areas that didn't have primer on them so i would give them another pass

2) something was wrong with my models or the primer was old/bad

you can also see how much i over-painted even using the games workshop mechanicus red for the cloaks too

you'll see however that the primer i used from the hardware store, even though maybe still a little too much coverage, came out much better

What should i do?

These models took a lot of work to put together. Including lots of greenstuff work and casting my own chests to get more rouge trader IG torsos.

Are they salvageable once i start putting regular paint on? Or do i need to get out the purple stuff? This concerns me because as i recall you sometimes have to use a toothbrush and a lot of the parts will come apart and some of the paint doesn't come out of the deeper cracks. I.e. the eagles. Does anyone know if it works better on recently painted models though? I did this last Sunday.

thanks in advance for any advice. ugh

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think that is a case of bad primer/bad priming job. That is, something went wrong in the process and it "fuzzed" and/or didn't flay flat. Could have been humidity or something too.

I could be that the overspray from one, was getting on the others, and so, being too far away, had "dried" and then landed on the model. This might be why it's so "fuzzy." Too much primer usually just looks like "gloop" obscuring details.

Perhaps just strip them?

edit: Miss read it as you using the red spray from GW not hard ware primer.

Honestly. you may be able to salvage some of them by taking a brush and trying to knock off some of the fuzz. and paint using thinned paints or an airbrush to try and not increase the layer thickness. otherwise incorporate some of the over paint texture into the model like rust or dust.

but really outside of the tan primer the other two doesnt look that bad imho.

Army Painter is pretty notorious for being so so on quality. Stick to Krylon if using a rattle can or Stynlrez if using an airbrush.

What exactly do you think is bad? They look OK to me. Maybe a little over primed but no loss of detail or anything. Nothing to flip about by any means.

That’s the answer I wanted but too late

I only dumped about half of them in purple power just now. The rest didn’t get as much paint and the details better I think.

Thanks
