So I am trying to recreate the House Krast colors from the old 40,000 Epic line on an Imperial Knight:

I initially chose VGC Ultramarine Blue, but I realize it's a lot more azure than I'd expected, and washing and glazing such large surfaces usually results in patchiness; I prefer an even coat with some blending. Doing more research, the color that I think matches best is VMA French Blue. However, I paint with a brush, and there does not seem to be a VMC or VGC equivalent. VMC Prussian Blue seems too dark, and VMC Andrea Blue too light.

Can anyone give me a recommendation for a blue? I prefer it to be Vallejo, as I have had bad experiences with Army Painter and Reaper paints, and I like dropper bottles.

Are you using VMC Prussian Blue, and not VMC Dark Prussian Blue? The regular Prussian Blue is pretty close to that color.

My mind just got blown. I did not realize that there are two VMC Prussian Blues. Will investigate. Thanks!

Game Air Magic Blue seems a little too bright Game Air Imperial Blue a little too dark, BUT a 50/50 mix seems about right to me. Just waiting for it to dry to see if I am right. Edit: that came out a bit darker than your image, gorgeous colour though so not a dead loss.

They are fine for brushing on.

72.720 Imperial Blue
72.721 Magic Blue

Came out like this over silver glossy card, wetish toward the lower half

Update: VMC Prussian Blue works great; I am going to paint ontop of black primer and line with black paint. Thanks everyone! Probably will actually start this new Knight this month. (I just like to get all my colors figured out in advance.)

Id look for an equivalent to enchanted blue (GW) or crystal blue (AP), with a blue wash will be dark like the pics

VMC Prussian Blue is great color, but it is pretty strong and deep and becomes even darker after varnishing, so I'd use bright primer and/or highlight big parts of it with a 50/50 mix together with brighter color with airbrush if you have one if you want to match the picture exactly.

@Shadenaut
Okay. How does this sound?

1. Prime black
2. Undercoat raised areas in VMC Sky Grey and lower areas in VMC Basalt Grey
3. Apply layer of VMC Prussian Blue
4. Mix VMC Prussian Blue with small quantities of VMC Sky Blue and brighten up raised areas

Sounds like a plan. Although I'm not sure why you people like so much priming your stuff black.

Black allows for laziness/speed as missing a spot (in a joint or seam) isn't noticable or you can pass it off as 'done'. White requires a constant vigil for any missed spots as finding a white dot in an inaccessible area is really frustrating :p

This becomes less of an issue when airbrushing but when using a brush and going for tabletop standard it can be quite easy to miss a spot (at least for me anyways).

Four reasons:
1) The majority of this model is still going to be metallic and darker colors.
2) Black primer covers my painting sins and aids in shading.
3) I practice undercoating anyway. VMC grey paints are great for this. So if I want to paint on a light color, VMC Sky Grey. Otherwise, paint directly onto the black primer or Basalt Gray.
4) I only own black gesso.
