So as Clan rats still (for some unfathomable reason) come on square bases and as GW charges a pretty penny for round bases I thought about instead of getting regular bases I could get some of those fancy resin ones with a base detail already imprinted upon them. However I've no idea what might look good with a load of skaven and what might also look good if I don't want to have to commit to buying the same base for every single model in the entire army. So something decent but not too outlandish.

I wonder if any here have done similar or might have any suggestions; I've gone through a load that Wayland Games stock but nothing has jumped out at me screaming "use me" so I'm open to ideas and suggestions

You can probably find cheap round bases somewhere other than GW.

And if you think GW charges a lot for round bases, those resin terrain bases are going to be a bit of a shock for you...

Yep

imho skaven look best in ether mud, wasteland or city (like vermintide)

mud is easy enough with texture paste.
Wasteland is mostly crackle paint.
City you could knock out a bunch with a flagstone pattern roller from gsw.

otherwise there should be a lot of options for fantasy city or dwarf city resin bases but those are going to get REALLY expensive at skaven numbers

iirc bit sites on ebay sell bases fairly competitively last i remember especially the smaller infantry ones.

How many round bases do you need?

A likely cheaper option would be to buy the infinitely cheaper slotta base, fill the gap in them, and then mash basing materials over it

Yes, the old slotta bases (no longer in production?) are pretty cheap on the second-hand market.

Re basing, the most flexible option would be 'muddy town', i.e. random cobblestones and paving (either cut from plain plasticard and sprue, or from special textured plasticard), partially covered in random mud/rubble/gravel/weeds. So long as you stick to the same colours for the stone and the mud, the basing will look consistent through the whole army.

Oh, yeah, slotta bases are easy to cover. Masking tape will do the trick just fine, then paint/sculpt/flock over it as usual.

MUCH cheaper option than resin.

Speaking of slotted bases.

For skaven since iv done those (oh god the memories)

im going to assume you have a ton of isle of blood clan rats,

take a snip to the sides of the square slotted bases, you may get lucky and still have the foot slat on the rats, then you can just use them in the slot as normal.

Also note that a lot of the rat feet break really easily which is why im doing mud. to cover that up. just something to keep in mind.

Went with a basic wall filler mixed with a bit of water here, painted to look like sand.

because with my almost sense of not quite humour "desert rats" was considered too good to pass up

See my original plan was hinging on the duel pack coming out months before the new Battletomes - based on the lag times GW has had in the past...

I should have known that as soon as I came up with that idea the GW mind-readers would have come up with a way to counter it! So I think I'm going to retire this idea since the tome is coming out right at the same time so the idea of spending more on a very slow grow army is no longer as attractive to me as it was a week ago.
