So I have a model of Dahyak Grekh. The moment I saw the model, I thought it looked like something out of a western.

So, I want to make it look like this

My problem is how to make the hat. Should I look for something online or should I sculpt it myself? If I do sculpt it, could anyone give some advice or point me towards some guides?

There’s a bunch of cheap Reaper Bones models with cowboy hats. I used one from a guy called the Hillbilly to give the new genestealer cult boss a swanky new hat.
Spoiler:

You’d have to be really certain about it though since you would need to chop the top of his head off for it to go on.

I sculpted my own a while ago. It's not too difficult. Just don't put too much into the body of the hat. Work up carefully.

Perhaps I'll try my hand at sculpting first. I can always give up and buy something instead. If the hat doesn't fit, I'll make it look like the hat has been ripped open to make room for the quills.

If you sculpt, do it in stages. Flatten a disc onto greaseproof paper or something non-stick, then while that is curing, roll a small sausage the width of the top of the hat. When both are cured cut the top part to size, glue them together and then greenstuff around the join so it looks natural.

you can also look for the old 2.5" tall plastic cowboys
(cheap on line)
and have several hat style options

I took someones advice on this for my Orks with Fire Helmets
(and thanks to whoever that was, I can't remember)

Okay, so I made an attempt at sculpting the hat. It's a little big and a bit too wide, but it looks rather nice from the side.

Thanks for all the advice. Building it in stages certainly helped.

The more I look at it though, the more I think I might try and to sculpt it again. I also found some toy soldiers to steel hats from.

Managed to sit down and paint this guy. Pretty proud of how it turned out.

So where are “The Good” and “The Bad”?

Because while you did a great job on him, he’s got a lock on “The Ugly”
