Anyone thinking of running sternguard in their marine lists now after the beta bolter rule?? Quite handy to just have them sit at the back in a squad of 6 or 7 with a heavy bolter thrown in for hellfire shells with the other dudes pumping out 12 long range SIB shots per turn for relatively cheap??

I always enjoyed my sternguard. They might not have been top-table material, but always did well by me. With the point drop in CA18 and the beta bolter rule, they got a lot better.

My main issue is how I built my squads, which was not for 8th. 2x10 man squads. One is all naked, basic bolter guys (good in 8th) and the other is bolter/PF sarge (better now with points drop on the fist) 2 basic guys, 2xHF 5 c-melta. They REALLY miss stepping out of a drop pod and getting right up in someone’s face turn 1. 9” away takes all the wind out of their sails.

I have been running sternguard in 2x10 groups dropping in by pod with a lieutenant w/jump pack and i really like the new rules. It helps increase their threat range aftet dropping in without requiring them to move.

I'm running mine with Bolters, x2 Combi Melta, and a Powerfist Sarg. Hopefully between the meltas and the fist they can take down a target when they drop pod in, with a jump LT to back them up.

The Beta bolter rule should have little to no impact on Sternguard. They aren't going to be standing still at 24" hoping something comes within range. They need to be forced into 12" so you can dictate what gets hit with their special ammo.

Sternguard have a 30 inch range on their bolters. They really can reach out and touch someone.

Yep, drop 20 sternguard into the center of the board and they can pretty much do whatever they want for the game. Its how you get them there thats the question. I prefer drop pods but rhinos are honestly the better choice.

For me, the problem with Sternguard is that for 1 point more, you can get an Intercessor. An Intercessor has twice as many wounds, the same range and just 1 point of AP less.

More importantly, they are Troops which give you both ObjSec and more CPs.

I admit that Sternguard are more easily transportable but for the extra point, Intercessors bring too many extra benefits for me to find Sternguard worthwhile.

FWIW, Sternguard get access to Grav Cannons and can still be easily delivered by Lias. At minimum, the point slash and Beta Bolters made me want to revisit that as a Vanguard detachment so...

Sternguard also get that 1cp strat to boost their shots...Though Vigilus intercessors can now boost too.

Most annoying thing IMO is Sternguard get the gun and Vets get the 2pt shields and the 2 can’t combine like a DW squad.

Which definitely sucks for sure. However you get them as Raven Guard to boost your defense.

I was thinking a Vanguard detachment to supplement my Deathwatch with Sternguard with Grav Cannons, Lias to deliver them, and an Ancient with the Relic Banner. Keep everyone close together and they simply keep belting two shots at 30", even if they die.

At least it would create use for all the regular Mk3 Bolter dudes I made.

Not sure - DW > Sterns. Not even close really.

Mostly for the use of the Ancient and being able to hold objectives. Like I said, I'm just flirting with the idea of doing the revisit.
