Is there any consumer interest in a Mixed Martial Arts (UFC / Bellator) or Pro Wrestling (80's / 90's) rule set with mini support? Feedback is always welcome

Thanks,

Well, Rumbleslam is a thing and, having played it, is pretty fun. You'd just need to make sure there's enough to engage players so that it's not just two or more guys standing next to each other, slapping away until until someone falls over.

I totally agree. We just released "Sons of Mars" a gladiator combat rule set a few months back so we've put a lot of work into solving that issue of stagnant one vs one combat in wargames. Without fluid mechanics and movement options you don't have much of a game in this genre

There's a ton of great card games out there. It would be interesting to figure out how to build a dynamic miniatures game around the concepts.

I'd be interested in a pro wrestling mini game/rulesset (the old WWF RPG had lots of good mechanics).

I would not play an MMA game even for money. (But I think MMA is mind numbingly dull, so I might be biased.)

There was a guy running the WWF rpg at conventions in the late 90s. He used the action figures as minis. He usually ran it as a Royal Rumble. Had a lot of fun with that game.

Grappling rules in RPGs are often the most complex rules for the least amount of return.

Basing an entire game on grappling, which is what most MMA matches devolve into, would not be entertaining.

Yeah.. there was a book published by Whitman Games but not sure how hard it would be to find a copy..

Had a buddy that had the book and said there was an expansion that may or may not ever produced.

@OP:
Pro wrestling with minis
I have been waiting for ages for a wrestling game to come up. The setting could have been campy like Blood Bowl but GW was incapable to deliver. Luckily for me, I stumbled last year upon Rumbleslam and really liked it. It´s a fast flowing game and still complex enough to not grow stale. Your wrestling game should be at least of the same quality for me to buy in.

No ... However a Game built around Wushu styles Samurai fighting styles, and other Martial arts styles with a heavy emphasis on poses stances and single combat would go over well for a skirmish game. Not so much MMA

I think there's a lot of potential in a pro-wrestling game, but I think the inherent trap is making it a deathmatch with life totals or something like that. Pro-wrestling is more cooperative and something where you work together to build up a pool before trying to seize it for yourself or something like that than trying to make it using traditional mechanics.

FWIW, the best pro wrestling game out there is probably Monsterpocalypse.

This.

In order to pull off those high flying moves that get the crowd going both wrestlers have to work together. Otherwise someone could get seriously hurt. Even basic slams can really mess someone up if done improperly. It would be cool to see a pro wrestling game reflect that. Maybe some sort of management/storymode that generated win conditions for fights?

Anyways, looking at Rumbleslam and I think I might have to grab that. Seems like a game you could get people to play casually, as long as your collection wasn't just a bunch of booby girls in tights, haha! Plus building your own ring sounds fun and easy as it's only a 1'x1' area. Heck it might even be a fun tournament game too.

One on one combat can be done well, but it's very difficult and would be more difficult for unarmed combat. Having played the best Gladiator game in existence, it's very much possible. However, having played a dozen other Gladiator games...it's also absolutely awful when done poorly.

If you were going to do a WWF game you'd need to expand the scope of the game well beyond punching each other for show while stomping your foot.

-Create mechanics for the fake drama of WWF (i.e. unexpected arrivals mid-fight, etc.)
-Create an audience excitement meter which both players are playing toward...instead of winning the fight (since they're often pre-determined)
-Create a Charisma mechanic for playing to the crowd to generate bonuses or add to the excitement meter, or likewise have a negative impact on you.
-Have in place some grudge match / vendetta mechanics where players and characters would have an arch nemesis etc.
-Have a mechanic for flexibility, strength, agility, required to carry out various maneuvers successfully.
-Have some actual real-life mechanics such as failing to do a proper move and injuring your opponent (possibly canceling the match and negatively impacting TV ratings and audience excitement.
-Have out-of-role mechanics for long term injuries, physical detriments from crazy maneuvers, etc.
-Have a meta game of running the organization or the fighter's career, possibly involving varying audience numbers, varying types of arenas/settings.

I have zero interest in a wrestling game and wouldn't buy one or even play one, but if you're going to make one it'll need to have a lot more depth and interest than just punching someone or hitting them with a chair. For what it's worth I think the audience is extremely small compared to almost any other form of miniature gaming --- but if you're just releasing an $8.00 PDF of the rules or something, no skin off your back. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the good feedback and reference material, everyone! Just to let all of you know, if we do go forward with this project our goal is to put out a deep wrestling system as well as a campaign where you can build your own wrestling promotion from the ground up.

If you want to see how the base combat system will work check out our free demo of our gladiator game "Sons of Mars". It's built for 1 vs 1 combat and a lot of the mechanics will most likely carry over.

Here is an old post from me about the game:

I visited a boardgame convention several months ago in my home town where I presented BB on behalf of the local GW shop. Just next to our table was a game which caught my interest in an instant:

Rumbleslam- A terrific fantasy wrestling boardgame!

So I went over in between our demo games and asked a few questions about this product. I must add that I am a wrestling fan of the 80´s & 90´s and most of the models on the table where not my cup of tea. Though after I checked the homepage of the company, my wrestling heroes were included in the game after all. What a joyful turn of event! Next day I had to ask the promoters of this game why they hadn´t included Hulk Hogan in their demos and they answered that they didn´t know who he was...
But don´t be too harsh with these people. They are Germans like me and wrestling is not a very popular sport/sport entertainment in my country like it is in the USA, Canada or Japan.

What is Rumbleslam all about?
You try to throw out all opposing wrestlers like in a Royal Rumble in order to achieve a victory. There is a five turn limit to do this.

Game Modes?
You can have single, tag-team, tornado tag-team and battle royal matches.

Any other winning conditions?
No, there aren´t any rules for pinfalls or submissions. Just toss your opponent out of the ring.

What kind of attacks are available to the wrestlers?
Brawl, Grapple, Turnbuckle, Lift & Throw opposing & friendly wrestlers, Rope Rebounds and Special Attacks.

It´s a fantasy wrestling game, right? Tell us some fantastic stuff.
There are three weight classes in this game: 1 (Halflings, Goblins, etc.), 2 (Humans, Orcs, etc.) & 3 (Ogres, Trolls, etc.). It is more difficult to toss out heavy opponents than light ones.
Undead, forest creatures, dwarves, dark elves and elves are also present.

Are there some kind of special dice or just plain boring D6?
There are four kind of special dice. Bronze, Silver, Gold & Crowd. All of them are six-sided.

How are attacks resolved? Are there any kinds of critical hits?
Take a look at your wrestler card and choose an attack type. Roll your dice and count the number of stars on them (successes) and compare them to your opponent´s roll. If the attacker scores more successes than the defender then the latter suffers damage or any other kind of adverse effect.

If the difference between the rolls is four or more, then additional damage is caused with other nice effects like stunned, shoving, knockdown or even a dreaded knockout.

What kind of attributes/stats are used? What can you do in a round?
Health, Attack (Brawl), Defend (Brawl), Grapple, Dexterity, Popularity (Pop), Move & Action Points (AP).

Every action costs AP. But you cannot always do what you want. Remember that you control a wrestler and your job is to entertain the crowd. So after you have just completed the same action twice in a turn, the crowd might be displeased if you try the same move for the third or even fourth time. Roll a Crowd die for the former and even two Crowd dice for the latter example: On a result of a BOO! your wrestler´s turn ends immediately. Otherwise you are allowed to do your thing.

Are there any kind of special rules in the game to differentiate the wrestlers further?
Yes, there are a lot. I only own four models up to now but I can tell you that Gun (Hulk Hogan) is overpowered because of his special rule which is called Hulk Out. Now who would have guessed that?

Tell us some fluff stuff.
Wrestlers are organized into different casinos. If your team consists of wrestlers from the same casino then you are entitled to a minor bonus.

Will this game become boring quickly?
Not if you invest a few bucks into a card deck which represents random stuff which happens during the match.

What wrestlers have you bought and why?
1: Gun (HULK HOGAN) RACE: ORC
2. WAAARIOR (ULTIMATE WARRIOR) RACE: ORC
3. CARIA (GINA CARANO) RACE: HUMAN
4. JESTER (HARLEY QUINN) RACE: HUMAN

The first two are wrestling legends and are therefore a must have. I also liked the models for 3 & 4. Gina is a former MMA fighter and she can really dish out some serious damage in this game. And well, Jester is Harley. I had to buy her.

What kind of wrestling rings are up for sale?
- 3D-Ring

- 2D:
Forest/lawn, wrestling ring & parking lot.

There may be more but I am too lazy right now to check.

Is there anything bad to say about this game or are you on their payroll?
There is a couple of stuff which I don´t like bit it is only minor things to me.

1. No pin & no submissions. I would have expected these things in a wrestling game.
2. Gun (Hulk Hogan) has a signature move which is a leg drop. A leg drop is a move which can only be applied to a downed opponent. But in this game you can attack a standing opponent with a leg drop. This does not make sense to a wrestling fan like me.
3. The minis are made of resin so you have to wash them properly with soap or your coat/paint won´t stick. The two gals were damaged right from the beginning and I had to repair them with green stuff. It was also an exercise in patience to glue the thin arms of Jester to her body. Gun was the best model for assembly because you didn´t have anything to assemble.

Where are the pics of the models?
Here is the link to the minis:
