Great article and review,
I have a lot of the L5R miniatures and they are decent for army filler. I agree that the Kensei miniatures are awesome. Do you prefer playing Test of Honor or ronin better? Do you play bushido by GCT? They have a lot of great figs as well. Ash from Guerilla gaming is starting TOH soon on his YouTube channel. Sorry for rambling on.

How about these guys? Obviously For historicals, ignire the more 'fantastic' things like oni or dragon cavalry.

But the ashigaru spearmen and riflemen look solid, as do the blade masters as samurai.

I'm planning on buying in a bit for my Test of Honour games.

I really like the Titan forge figs.... I think they would be great for a Kings of War army-empire of men as well.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Footsore’s warring clans are great miniatures as well!

Mmm I don't have any Titan forge minis. They look interesting but are much too "fantasy" for me.

I'd like to try some of the Kingsford minis and see if they are any good:

Dixon minis are not good, and should only be used if you are doing an all Dixon force. They look short and squat vs most folks minis:

There is also AW, which could be promising:

Also the Assault Group look reasonable:

Lastly Foundry's stuff is always nice:

Out of that list, personally I think that only Kingsford are any good. All the others just seem derpy, bad body proportions or a very dated sculpt.

For me I only play samurai games of around a max of 30 mins so the cost is never really a factor and I will try to get the best minis I can. Just because it will take me the same amount of time to paint a decent mini and a awful sculpt so I may as well have my time better spent on the better sculpt.

Its all subjective of course and options are always good.

AW has a nice range of stuff for Ronin forces, lots of good pieces for Bandits or Ikko Ikki models. Plus lots of bits that you cannot get through others, or at least not as large a variety off (palanquins, artillery, etc). Some of their stuff should mix decently with the Perry Minis. A little 'chunkier' in spots, but similar in overall kit/design. They'd also probably match up well with Footsore. Again, slightly inferior, but unless the heights are off they should blend in well once painted.

Assault Group's Sohei are all pretty reasonable as are some of the others. Some I'll grant are 'eh.

Foundry's stuff is a mixed bag, I'll grant you as well. Some of it is a bit funky, but they do have some very nice pieces in there. Again, good stuff for holes in some of the other's kit.

Oh, and I forgot Northstar:

Then also Old Glory (not great minis, but a different aethetic, that allows for variety. They will be smaller than other MFGs, being closer to 25mm in scale, but if used for a single buntai in Ronin rather than mixing models they work fine).
