If you were building a Genestealer cult army what would you buy in terms of usefulness. Based on Rules what is the most competitive. and are they both good choices or one is the clear winner.

The book isnt really out yet. To much information missing. I would wait for now.

But no matter what you will need Troops and HQ's, get at least one of each HQ and 3-6 boxes of troops.

Personally I'd stay away from Hybrid Metamorphs, too many other good choices in the elites slot for a unit that is basically the same as the Troops Hybrid choice.

And don't bother taking "Brood Brother Infantry Squads" in you GSC list; take Brood Brothers as a part of an Allied AM detachment. Better gear options that way.

Ah, the standard Dakka reply of "wait"....

So what counts as "really being out"?

Launch date was the 9th, right?
Anyways the books + models arrived at the local shop this Fri/Sat (8th/9th).
Everything is for sale on GW.

2 of the boxes of mixed troops and the brood coven set is what I'm looking at.

Gives you a Patriarch, Magus, Primus, 2x 10 Man Neophyte Squads, and 1x 10 man Acolyte Squad.

Nice start to a battalion!

I would wait for the Start Collecting they previewed in the book before buying too many troops or the like.

It's an Iconward, a box of Acolytes/Metamorphs, a box of Neophytes(not Brood Brothers), and a Goliath/Rockgrinder--assuming the book's preview is correct.

And while yes, the stuff is available for sale--it's been 3 days since the release. It takes at least a week for people to really "digest" a book.

If it were me doing my own purchases right now?

Jackal Alphus
2-3 boxes of Jackals
2 Ridgerunner Achilles

We'll get you, outlander!

Yeah it's out, but to be fair we could see significant changes in the FAQ in a couple of weeks.

I like that box. I hope that is the actual box.

As far as I know, it should be. I kept trying to find a picture of it when someone first mentioned it during a review because they kept saying "Primus".

It's an Iconward though. Couple the SC with a Broodcoven set though and you have a good 'start', with the Iconward being able to get built as a regular ol' Acolyte with an Icon to free up an additional model as leader or something like that to play with squad sizes.

I would say wait until the two week FAQ. Right now the winners seem to be acolyte squads with hand flamers, Aberrants, Patriarch with Psychic Powers, and 20 man IG squads getting orders. However three of those are most likely to change soon so I wouldn't build an army around them right now.

Acolytes, Neophytes, and the Broodcoven are all a good solid base to work off. Just magnetize the acolytes or wait to see how the hand flamer cost changes.

A crapton of jackals with a bunch of genestealers and GSC Infantry for the center. Bait them in the center and zoom right past their flanks to shot everything in the backfield.

Adeptus Arbites so that the suicide could commence quickly.....why does a faction that is smaller than Ratlings in the Imperium ....perhaps even Ogryns get a codex.

A short stand alone game of Arbites vs GSC is about as fleshed out as they ever need to be.

Arbites for the win!!!

2 boxs of ogryns
50 IG troopers
4 IG models that could work as HQs of different kind
1 of each GSC characters
2 boxs of bikes
40 brood dudes
18 genestealers
1 swarmlord
10 abberants

should be enough to play with unless the post codex FAQ kills the codex.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

The model has only been playable for a few days, so it's a little hard to say exactly how good he is and suggest detailed tactics or tricks.

As for moving and shooting, bear in mind that he has a special ability that allows him to nominate a critical target. If he nominates the same thing he shoots at, it nullifies the movement penalty.

Its early and I am just playing around with lists the same as most people I imagine, but I can tell you I had Tooth and Claw and will happily use all the models in that set. The power tools are more expensive than I'd have hoped, I guess they will be painted in DeWalt yellow. If you also want the Primaris or want to trade/sell them I think that is a good buy.

It looks like you have a real choice with the Troops: build around Brood Brothers with the allied detachment or use the Hybrids with their chapter tactic. Mixing them doesn't look like a good idea.

I really like both of the upgraded Mining Lasers in conjunction with Jackal Alphus and am thinking of using two of them in 2 Battalions, with plenty of lasers, some CC units and a lot of mobility. You've got to figure that most opponents will castle up rather than walk into your ambush.

I'm sure that there are some great combos to be found with both the Tyranid and AM allies, and I think the psychic powers may get some errata. I'd take that super pistol on an Alphus Warlord but might not be able to depending on how that shakes out. The Patriarch might be too good to pass up. So personally I'll be content to paint up what I've already got for now, and maybe pick up the Alphus'.

I don’t buy for competitiveness, but I have been contemplating picking the army up. If I did so, I’d lean on the more alien aspects - the three-armed hybrids, aberrants, magus, genestealers and brood lord. Personally, I’d avoid the more human elements (as I already have a Guard army) - though I’d love to pick up the bikes.

It never ends well

The codex is playing the cults up to be surprisingly large players in the galaxy. Some cults have expanded to cover entire sectors, and there are, or have been cults on almost every major imperial world including Mars, Prospero and Terra. Some cults have expanded so much that they’re starting to link up and coordinate with other cults.

Also theres a 40k equivalent of Umberella Corp in the form of the Twisted Helix cult which is really cool.

To answer the topic: I already had a sizeable GSC force, so I’ve mainly be buying the new characters. I’d highly recommend the Starn’s Disciples KT box as its great value and both units included are powerhouses

Everything.

Aberrants and Acolytes with rock weapons, as well as all of the different Mining Lasers you can get are critical for anti-tank capabilities.

Neophytes, Brood Brothers, and Acolytes all are good troop options and can bring plenty of different weapons.

Every single character fills a role, even the Locus. The Nexos, despite not having a single special weapon, is a 50 point way to get command points back, better than sacrificing a warlord trait or relic.

The Goliaths, Achilles, and bikes all add a lot of speed and a bit of toughness to the back line, and they're all cheap enough to spam if you really wanted to.

The Jackals, Genestealers, and even the Hybrid Metamorphs are fast and killy all in their own right, with plenty of different stratagems and weapon options to fit them to different roles.

The entire Codex is really solid. Honestly, what I *wouldn't* buy right now are the basic Astra Militarum things. I think the Codex does what GW set to do: It stands on its own.

Yeah it's out, but to be fair we could see significant changes in the FAQ in a couple of weeks.

At wich point the answer will reset to "Wait for the Spring FAQ". And then the Fall FAQ. Oh heck, why don't we just skip right to recommending the OP wait for CA19?
Afterall, changes could occur....

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Dakka "Wait" answer to everything.

Yes, b.c a couple days is enough time for players to read the book and play it to see what a new player should buy other than the basic's HQ/Troops. Its completely different from the Index, we need to play it first....

Im not saying wait months. Im saying get the necessities right now (HQ's and Troops) and in the mean time let players digest the codex for a little bit.

Troops, HQ's, Abrs, Transports, elite characters, are all good choices, you have plenty of models to work on and play with with just those.

Remember he ask for "Usefulness"
