I'm going back up against the Necrons later this week, and after having my Venerable Dreadnought vapourised with one shot last time I'd like to avoid that situation this time...

I'm not about to change my list, but some general suggestions on how to best operate without being picked-off one vehicle at a time by my opponent's Doomsday Ark would be appreciated.

Here's my 800 point Ultramarines battalion detachment:

Captain in Terminator Armor: Iron Resolve, Relic blade, Storm bolter, The Sanctic Halo
Lieutenant: Lightning Claw, Storm bolter
3x Tactical Squad:
. 3x Space Marine: Boltgun
. Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun, Power fist
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Missile launcher
Venerable Dreadnought: Twin lascannon, Dreadnought combat weapon w/Storm Bolter
Land Speeder: Heavy bolter, Typhoon missile launcher
Whirlwind: Storm bolter, Whirlwind vengeance launcher

Cheers

Close combat is not the way. They will usually fly to the second floor of a building and leave no space for combatants. High damage is not the way because of quantum shielding. Massed bolters, plasmas or autocannons work well. The target only has t6 4+sv. It regains 1w every round so you want to focus fire them down one at a time

Switch to 4x autocannon dread.

Probably the best unit for killing doomsday arc is a stormhawk interceptor. Quantum sheilds vs these weapons isn't very good and hes minus 1 to hit you. Also reasonably easy to deploy out of LOS and if he moves to gain LOS his weapon becomes crap. So - I think this will work really well.

Helverins Autocannon is good. DDA's armor save is only 4+ so pushing it to a 5+ then doing flat 3 damage makes it hard to roll under unless he pops the strat. Anything with flat 2 damage and lots of attacks is best. Ad Mech Sydonian Dragoons are evil.

Just spam plasma weapons. Autocannons might also do great work.

I know some people advised against it, but actually charging is a good move for a couple of reasons:
1. If Nihilakh, it'll lose its reroll bonus after moving
2. Once the Ark moves, it has to use the lesser profile for shooting.

Don't be afraid to be aggressive with charging.

I guess 1W isn't the end of the world as I'm not sure I could take it down in one turn.

Xenomancers wrote:Switch to 4x autocannon dread

I don't see that loadout in the Codex

Xenomancers wrote:Also reasonably easy to deploy out of LOS and if he moves to gain LOS his weapon becomes crap.

Yeah but difficult to keep my valuable units out of LOS beyond deployment and I'll need LOS to shoot at it anyway.

There's not a lot in my army with that profile

Plasma and autocannons shred anything relying on quantum shielding for survival.

Problem is you are only able to charge it against noob necron. Those thing fly. They park somewhere high(high being like 2" raise) where you cannot position model near it=immunity to charge. Try to charge all you want. GW made rules that make it IMPOSSIBLE. It's one model so you can't even shoot part of it to clear room like you could with big unit.

Stormhawk is a flyer that moves 60 inches a turn - hide it behind a tall terrain feature - then fly right up next to it and blast is with 2 AC 2 skyhammer missles and an iccuris autocannon. You will likely kill it in 1 round of shooting.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

Not every table is going to have a place for all their Arks to camp and not be charged. That's terribly unrealistic.

Ruins etc are in about every table. I have yet to play game with neither ruins, hills, containers or so. In what planet bowling ball with zero terrain you are playing in?

That's under the assumption you can't even go on that hill with other units.

It isn't a terribly impossible task.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

(Necron Player Here)

Assault Cannons, Autocannons, and Plasma are all efficient (like hellblasters)

Powerfists and thunderhammers are effective as well, but harder to get into place, and have to brave some nasty overwatch.

Missile Launchers and Lascannons can work, but you really are hoping for a 3 on the damage dice. Otherwise at a whopping t6, 4+ armor....hurricane bolters are not to be underestimated.

*Edit*
Hellfire shells and Flak Missiles are both effective at adding chip damage

It is a pretty nice addition or a stalker - esp if you play a lot of Crons.

Minor note: Mathematically, the average damage of a roll of 3 and a roll of 4 is the same. Same with 2 and 5, and 1 and 6.

It is one big cannon right? Just do not have a juice obvius traget for it. It is a very big difference for the necron player if he is killing landraiders with it as opposed to rhinoes.

End result - he didn't bring the Doomsday Ark!

He brought a Doom Scythe which I blew out of the sky on turn 1 with a twin lascannon shot from my dread and a flakk missile!

Definitely your opponent's bad. Doom Scythes are pretty horrible, even as Sautekh.
