Hey there Dakka,
This report is from last month, I just haven’t had time to put it together. I had finished painting some models for my Empire army and asked my son if he wanted to play. I was excited to see the new models on the table, then he tells me he wants to play Vampires
. I have been playing Skaven lately to get a feel for the army, so I guess the newly painted will have to wait until next time. Sorry in advance for all the unpainted models, maybe someday I’ll catch up with life. This was a short game, so it’s a quick read.
So here are the armies
Vampires
Vampire lord, Vampire
BSB, Mounted Vampire, and Level 2 Necromancer
Two units of 10 Dire Wolves
Two units of 30 Skeletons with full command.
Two units of 20 Zombies.
9 Black Knights with full command.
30 Grave Guard with full command.
6 Crypt Horrors. I hate the
GW models and find Werewolves more fitting.
Two units of 2 Fell Bats.
1 Vargulf. Again, I hate the
GW model, hopefully this Zombie Werewolf will look cool when he is finished.
Skaven
Skaven Warlord on Bonebreaker,
BSB, Grey Seer, Warlock, 45 Storm Vermin.
50 Plague Monks, two units of 10 Giant Rats, 8 Censor Bearers, and a Warp Lightning Cannon.
4 Jezails, horrible pic.
40 Clan Rats with spears, 6 Rat Ogres, 2 Poison Wind Mortars.
Setup
The Vampire lord and
BSB are with the Graveguard in the center. The mounted Vampire joins the Black Knights. My Warlord and
BSB join the Storm Vermin and the Warlock hides in the Clan Rats.
Grey Seer is chilling on the rocks.
The Necromancer also decides to take advantage of the height advantage of the rocks.
Skaven Turn 1
Basically, moving up, magic is a bust and shooting is off.
Vampire Turn 1
A whole lot of charges coming my way.
The Vampire lord raises a bunch of Zombies to The Dire Wolves and Fell Bats on the left annihilate the Giant Rats. The Black Knights, boosted by a Vampire and Hellish Vigor break the Plague Monks
but fail to catch them. The Skeletons to the left failed their charge so they lumber behind with the rest of the army. In a surprise twist the Giant Rats on the right blow through the Dire Wolves and threaten the Necromancer.
Skaven Turn 2
Time to get even
.
Ugh, the War Lightning Cannon blows up
. The Fell Bats are tying up my Jezails and the mortars are off. The Grey Seer gets Death Frenzy off on the Storm Vermin. The Plague Monks rally. The Jezails actually win combat against the bats. The Rat Ogres put a beating on the Black Knights. The Warlord whiffs against the Crypt Horrors, but the bone breaker takes one down. The Storm Vermin do a few more wounds but not enough to destroy them. The Censor Bearers do some damage to the Skeletons but a few of them drop. The Giant Rats take out the Necromancer and over run.
Vampire Turn 2
OK, I expected the Vargulf to charge in, but I didn’t expect the Graveguard to come in too
. They lost a bunch to Dangerous Terrain. To make matters worse the Vampire Lord gets off an Irresistible on the BIG Invocation. That brings back all the Graveguard lost to terrain, a Crypt Horror, some Skeletons, and the Black Knights are almost back to full strength
. The Mounted Vampire does the rest of the work and the Black Knights are fully restored.
The entire game is resting on this combat
.
The Dire Wolves and Fell Bats on the left destroy the Jezails. The Poison Mortar on the right flees and the Bats redirect into the Clan Rats, they easily defeat the Bats and reform. The combined efforts of the Vampire Lord,
BSB, and Vargulf are too much for the Storm Vermin, they break and are run down. The Mounted Vampire chews through the Rat Ogres and runs them down.
Skaven Turn 3
Ok, this is abysmal. We call it here. All I have left is the monks, Grey Seer, and Clan Rats to face an entire army. This is the 2nd shortest game of Warhammer I have ever played.
Might be time retool the Skaven. The loss is mostly my fault, I moved too far up in the beginning, should have held back more. I am not liking the Warp Lightning Cannon
, maybe a Doom Wheel or Hellpit, possibly a Verminlord
Oh well, more reason to play more games
.
