Hey all, I've spent the greater part of a week in my off times at work attempting to bring a dead faction back to life: Eldar Corsairs. 7th had some sweet rules for them, and with the onset of 8th GW absolutely gutted them. No more HQ, no more elites or heavies, not even any real detachment bonuses. Just an interesting pistol set and some situational rules.
Well it's high time we changed that.
Presenting the fruits of my labor, incomplete and in progress, but it's a start. Formatting sucks, since I've literally been modifying a notes file on my phone for this.
Fandex: Aeldari Corsairs
All images ripped from google searches.
Give me your honest opinions about it; things that need to go, things you would add, etc.
Especially some more named characters, i just took some "exiled" Dark Eldar characters and gave a reason as to where they went.

Formatting could really use some work. Hard to fully read it all when it's in size 64 font and all over the place. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just skimming over it, Webway Maze is one of the most broken things I've come across in a long time. I can just cast the power and if I succeed I can just remove your unit and put it back in reserve? If you can't deploy it it's just destroyed?

I tried to follow the rules from the 7e power where you put the enemy unit into ongoing reserves. In 8e any unit not on the table after the end of the game is destroyed.
And if you can't find a small portion on your board edge to move a unit on from you're nearly tabled. Anyways.

Oh hey. Cool! Thanks for putting your time and energy into the always-awesome but currently suffering corsairs. Some scattered thoughts:
A.) Captain's gaze is really inconsequential. It's way less powerful than other 6" auras (like the standard reroll 1's to hit), and it's only really useful if you're running medium-sized squads. 5 man squads will generally die outright/anyway, and large squads that stand to lost the most to morale are less likely to care about a single ork boy. It's also a passive, reactive rule.
I'd rather have something more powerful that I can actively make use of or just remove it entirely so I don't have to think about it.
B.) Duke Sliscus makes sense being in the Corsairs book. Kruellagh and the Baron not so much. Why include them here? I know that drukhari going on raids tends to be corsairs-esque, but by that logic you could put basically all the drukhari HQs in this book.
C.) Curse of the Void seems like kind of a pain. If you're facing aeldari, they have one of the most potent leadership debuffs in the game. In general, you can't realistically give these guys a wide enough birth to avoid being in their aura with any of your other melee units. Consider shrinking the aura to 3" like most other leadership debuffs? Or treating it like the shadowspectres thing where you roll 2d6 and take the highest? Or maybe just drop the leadership thing entirely as it's fiddly and situational?
D.) Maybe make Captain's Guard optional instead of automatic? pretty sure all similar rules in the game are optional.
E.) I know you've just copied over the official Dancing on the Blade's Edge, but I question whether or not it really adds much to the game. At best, it adds extra rolling to the game. At worst, it results in feelbadsies when it costs you extra models. Would the army really lose any character if we just dropped this rule entirely?
F.) This rule probably warrants revisiting as well. Jump Shoot Jumping out of line of sight is extremely frustrating to opponents (it's basically a free 2CP Fire and Fade when it goes off), and making foot sloggers or expensive deepstrike bombs fail their charges is super annoying. It's a fluffy, flavorful rule that reflects the hit and run style of corsairs really well, but is it actually good for the game?
G.) No Shared Glory feels a little weird to me. IIRC, 7th edition corsairs could fill out their sub-formations (basically patrol detachments) with non-prince characters and were then restricted to a single prince for the army as a whole. Wouldn't it make more sense to do something similar? Making the prince a 0-1 choice or even a stratagem (like the Great Harlequin or Chapter Masters)? That way, you can fill up your other detachments with seers or what have you.
H.) Please clarify on vibro pulse weapons. Do you resolve all vibro pulse weapons together even if they have different profiles (pistols versus normal guns for instance), and do shots resolved against different targets still give each other bonuses? I put 2 shots into target A and 2 shots into target B. I hit 3 times, once on A and twice on B. How do you resolve all this?
I.) Hate Bringer. I dislike mechanics that grant bonus VP because the value of 1 VP could mean very different things in different missions. In a malestrom game or an ITC mission, it's nice but less impactful than in something like the Relic. And in a mission where you score VP equal to the PL of the enemy units you destroyed, 1 VP is nothing. And if your friend ever wants to make a mission where the VP only go up to, say, 3VP max, then 1VP is a huge boost.
J.) Night Hunters. The +1 versus targets in cover is neat (stolen from Striking Scorpions?), but maybe too potent on shooty units? Imagine a tide of lasblaster shots hitting on 2s. Maybe slap a range limit on it? Saying you can never have your cover benefits removed is kind of no-funsies. It's situational in that there aren't a lot of things that ignore cover in general, but the things that do tend to be Chapter Tactic equivalents. Imperial Fists have it rough enough as-is, man. No need to tell them that they can't even use their one thing.
K.) Sky Burners. For the sake of not having to fiddle with tracking exact movement army-wide, maybe have this kick in if you arrived from reserves or Advanced and drop the 6" part?
L.) Collector of Ancient Treasures. Seems a little unwieldy, but I get that it's a tough rule to faithfully translate into 8th. The big thing here is that there are only a couple really good relic weapons despite how many of them there are. Assuming you mean for this rule to bypass the normal restrictions of replacing the model's archite glaive, harlequin's kiss, etc., then this rule basically just turns into, "Hey, if you don't like any of the corsair relics, you can take the blood glaive and either the stories sword or Cegorach's rose because all other aeldari relic weapons are worse than those 3."
M.) Did you accidentally leave out the Leadership Combat drugs?
N.) Traveler of Forgotten Paths. A free shooty soulburst seems like it's probably abusable.
O.) Hunter of Exquisite Trophies. See above about VP-related mechanics being problematic. Maybe just have him generate 1 or 1d3 CP when he kills a character instead?
P.) Path Ward. Slightly awkward in that it forces you to gamble in your movement phase on whether or not Path Ward will go off in your psychic phase. If you advance and fail with this power, then you risk leaving a melee unit that didn't necessarily need to advance out in the wind. Or you might effectively be nerfing a unit that advanced to reach a distant target but could already have fired on a closer one.
Q.) I know Webway Maze is a translation of an older power, but it's also annoying and kind of clunky. Perhaps it should be replaced with something cleaner and less frustrating to play against?
R.) Shadowfields should probably be added to the shield list. Being basically defenseless once they drop is a balancing factor for them in the drukhari 'dex. Also, is it maybe too good being able to spam them?
S.) Jetpacks seem just a bit too speedy. 14" seems to be the Movement value for aeldari "wings" and such. Making them 16" wouldn't be broken, but it doesn't seem like an earned or necessary break from the standard. Same thing with the jetbike. What about corsair tech makes their bikes faster than, say, reaver jetbikes?
T.) Mark of Prince's Favor. wouldn't this let you double up on army-wide modifications? Like taking both an extra attack and also combat drugs?
U.) Eye of Darovyr. Please clarify. This is either really situational and limited (only letting the bearer make an attack) or else potentially really really overhwleming (letting a friendly unit near the the warlord auspex scan an enemy with 80 lasblaster shots).
Overall, there's a lot to like here!

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Thank you very much for the in-depth comments! I will take these all into account and make changes accordingly. Always good to have a second pair of eyes to see interactions and problems that slip by.
Never even considered comboing up with Mark of prince's favor

Take a look on the Eldar Subreddit, and search for Corsairs list. . I think we need to pool our resources, I've written a Corsairs list too. I haven't posted it here yet, because I'm new here, and because I wanted to get the rules absolutely nailed down before disseminating it.
I have been working on it for the last couple months, and rules wise I think all I need are minor tweaks. Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm.not trying to steal your thunder, but it looks like you love Corsairs as much as I do, and I'm hoping there's some way we can work together. Take a look at what I've got so far and tell me what you think.

Here's an updated list of changes based on critiques given here and elsewhere. I wanted to keep Webway Maze since it was such an interesting power in 7e, but I understand how clunky and annoying both it and Webway Tunnel can be in 8e. If snyone has a better set of psychic powers, I'm open to suggestions. I still would like some better characters to add as well. Here is the updated fandex, and I'll update the OP link as well. This is all fantastic stuff, really looks like a lot of thought has gone into it and the formatting is infinitely better than what i can do on my cell phone.
I'll try and look into that subreddits, see if i can't add my two cents there. In the mean time I'll continue to update my own file, and you all can glean and steal whatever you want from what I've got as long as there's credit somewhere. It would be a dream come true to submit as a community our thoughts for Corsair rules and for Forgeworld to consider them and publish at least similar rules.
