Subject: Favourite part in a new novel you've read?
Loved the part in Cadia Stands when the two surviving guardsmen Rath and Minka board the Space Wolves cruiser and all the Space Wolves start saluting the two guardsmen. I punched the air at that, what are your favourite parts in the new lore?

it's not from a novel, but from Gathering Storm 3 Gulliman's remarks shortly after revival
""Why do I still live? What more do you want from me? I gave everything I had to you, to them. Look what they've made of our dream. This bloated, rotting carcass of an empire is driven not by reason and hope but by fear, hate and ignorance. Better that we had all burned in the fires of Horus' ambition than live to see this."
it's a insanely powerful quote, it really hammers home the despair he must have felt upon seeing the state of the Imperium.

I just picked this one because it spoils nothing and gives a look into a part of the lore we know next to nothing about.
From "the rise of the ynnari: wildrider.
Yvraine gives one of the main characters a flashback to one of his previous lives. A life lived 60 million years ago..
Spoiler:
He staggered back, breathing quickly, heart racing.
‘What was that?’ he demanded, stumbling against the window-wall. After-images of arcane yet disturbingly familiar vistas floated through his thoughts. He remembered – recalled as though he had been there – vast cities in space larger than any craftworld. Giant figures that reminded him of the avatars of Khaine stalked alongside them, taller than Phantom Titans, bearing weapons that devastated strange cities and incinerated armies of unkempt alien beasts. He witnessed flights of starships that dwarfed the Ynnead’s Dream laying waste to whole star systems. Endless legions of skeletal warriors and terrifying engines of destruction fell upon him, razing worlds. With them flew the sun-eaters, feeding upon the suns of their foes, the galaxy swathed with shadow by their passing.
‘What…? How…?’ He regained a modicum of focus to find Yvraine standing directly in front of him, her stare no less penetrating than before.
‘Your aeldari soul remembers,’ she told him. ‘It has survived as long as the constructs buried beneath the surface of this world. In fact, it has thrived and lived, not dwelt in stasis. It has learnt and grown and become more powerful than ever. But trapped within the shell of your body it cannot express.’
‘Express what?’ Nuadhu pushed himself upright and looked at the planet again, only to avoid the unsettling stare of Yvraine.
‘Everything.’

i dont exactly like Roboute, but those questions and the realization of what has transpired, is probably the most 40k thing. Imagine the sheer horror that would wash over him, a primarch is on "wholenothalevel" compared to a human so the emotional & cognative impact is exponentially higher.

Not just that, Roboute's last memories were of the Imperial truth, anyone that lived then would be dumbfounded by the Imperium now.

When the Ghosts are trapped in the catacombs below the palace, never before have the Ghosts, masters of stealth, been so helpless and terrified. Brilliant piece of writing. Also feel bad for how many characters he killed off. 5 killed in 2 pages, including Banda and Leskon. Looks like Abnett took writing lessons from George R. R. Martin.

More like Homer or Shakespeare, both made George R, R Martin look like an amateur.

yeah, killing your characters isn nothing new and Abnett was writing long before GRRM took up GOT. most writers though kill their characters for important reasons, GRRM is just the "shock jock" of fantasy

It's a cracking quote, it's the only thing that made bringing him back something I could stomach. Great way to temper it and make sure it doesn't feel like a cheap cheat.

I loved the opening chapter to Wolfsbane. It did so much to explain a lot of Horus's character, his future insecurities, how the Emperor and his relationship with Horus changed once he wasn't the only one of his brothers to have been found.
It was also one of the few times the Emperor seemed to show any idea of how people actually work and for once wasn't the galaxy's crappiest dad.
That on top of some great trolling/teasing from Russ made me laugh pretty hard.

queen_annes_revenge wrote: I just read angron. It describes his life on nuceria leading up to the butchers nails. Does a good job of fleshing out his character and the legion.
Does it explain the whole failed Eldar assassination plot hole? That's always annoyed me.

From Imperator - an Inquisitor talking to a Legio Metallica crewman:
"Mannheim? I don't know the name, I'm afraid."
"Princeps of Steel Hammer. He was one of the heroes of Armageddon, destroying an entire gargant mob during the first Imperial counterattack before his engine was finally killed."
"Oh, yes. During the second war for Armageddon?"
"First war."
".....Oh? Oh, of course. First. Because there have definitely only been two wars for Armageddon."

After Gaunt has been promoted to Lord Militant, he has to promote someone to Colonel to lead the regiment while he is doing high command stuff. And Eli Rawne refusing him with the explanation that he can't be Corners successor. Man, I miss Colm.
From 'Anarch':
Spoiler:
Mkoll returns to the regiment after being badass and even returning a lost son of Tanith and Bonin is just: Oh, there you are, as if he was just gone for a smoke.

Blackstone Fortress novel, and the little short stories.
Spoiler:
Just all of it to be honest. It was a nice enjoyable change of pace to the usual 40k battles and wars etc (I know, many other exceptions to that kind too..)
The descriptions of the bar they visit though, loved that..

Still reading it, but I love the lack of emotion the commissar gets from the guardsmen in "Dead Men Walking" when he's talking about leave and the guy replies they're all staying on the ship.
“I am sure that, whatever exercises your lieutenant has planned for you, they are voluntary.’
‘Yes, sir. We all volunteered, sir.”
