As per the title,
I am painting some Brakiri and the yellow has come out far too strong and bold and want to knock it down a few notches. All of the inks and washes I have tried just make it look muddy though. So how would you go about making a more muted yellow than the sunflower colour I have?

It can really help to mix a little white into the base yellow colour to desaturate it, that can make it a lot easier on the eyes.
In terms of darkening it, the important thing about yellow is never to add black: it makes a dirty green. Stick to things like browns for shading it, purple can also be really nice.

IIRC best way to de-saturated is to mix it with grey.

Try a light brown or heavy gold brown.

What worked for me here:
Painted with Cygnus Yellow (P3, about equivalent to GW's bright yellow) - then lightly drybrushed with a mix of yellow and white, and washed with Army Painter Light Tone, and then shaded on the lower surface with some thin layers of Light Tone and Strong Tone.
The Light Tone does a really good job of muting the yellow without making it muddy - it's a really light, orange-brown tone.
