You need to thin that right down, a medium to maintain the distribution of pigment and some water.

I'd suggest start at Wash:Medium:Water ratio of 1:1:2 and adjust as you test. Each wash is different and you'll even see some variation between pots.

Also, look at the direction in which you're applying the wash.

The brush will apply a heavier "dose" of paint at the end of the brush stroke, so your brush stroke should be ending at the deepest recess.

This way you're drawing excess away from the raised area and into the recess as you apply the wash.
