I want to create my own planetary banner, but don't know what sort of imagery to put on it.
My planet, Deotrim, is a fortress world located in the temporary warp pass, near the middle of the great rift.

They are constantly drilled, as you would expect from any fortress world, and have a very good history in battle. They hate needlessly killing men, so only engage in seige warfare when it's the only option left, and commisars also happen to take midnight strolls around minefields with them a bit like they do with catachans. They prefer open warfare, but aren't afraid of urban warfare. Their armour stands out in environments because they want to show the enemy they aren't scared (they are just they don't want to show it), but veterans wear camo, as they often go behind enemy lines.

So what sort of iconagraphy would be on the banner. Please note this isn't just a regemental banner, it's the planetary banner holding all of the planets pride since the great crusade, and thus would have things from lots of different regiments as well as being very decorated.

The flesh tearers really like killing so much. In fact they may love it more than inquisitors.

Is the planet noted for anything besides being a fortress world? What's it look like? You could stylize the planet to make it look like it's made of steel plate or castle-like in appearance. Or you could just show a planet with a sword drawn through it or the imperial eagle clutching at it with crossed weapons below.

As you say, the banner should reflect the planet, not the army.

Just a quick riff for consideration (the phrase is [psuedo]-latin for "Only in death does duty end")

That is very cool. How did you make it. I'm thinking It will have the image of a bastion on the flag, and a few mentions of the greatest regiments.
And the quote I'm writing is IUSTUS PRO VICTORIA Victory for the righteous.

A quick Google on ‘imperial guard banners’ gets a load of good examples in the 40k style - maybe use one of them as a base and/or inspiration?

Shouldn't for such a banner the form of ablativus qualitiatis should be used? As it describes a pertinent trait of those who are to be victorious?

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

It was done in MS publisher - but you can get the same results with a word processor (most of the items are just drawing shapes) or a paint/illustrator program like paint or gimp.

As for “famous regiments”, I could see their numbers/names appearing in the spheres/planets, with the most famous in the “highest” planet.

It never ends well
