Tough Tyrant Guard

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Hello All!

So recently I picked up a few more Hive Tyrants to expand my burgeoning Nidzilla army. My goal is to make a Supreme HQ Detachment featuring the Swarmlord, which I already have, and 2 Hive Tyrants to complement my other monsters (currently consisting of a Flyrant, two Tyrannofexes, and a Trygon). Currently my list is at 1000 points and I'm hoping these two Hive Tyrants, plus an additional squad of something, will essentially bump it up to 1500 points.

My question is regarding the viability of Walkrants. At this point, I could build my two new Hive Tyrants as Walkrants and have enough points left over for a squad of Tyrant Guard, or, if I'm dreaming bigger, another monster like a Malanthrope. However, from all of my internet readings, it looks like Walkrants are not really the most competitive option since they are slower than Flyrants and essentially require something like Tyrant Guard or Tyrannocyte transport to keep them safe.

Would there be any reason, aside from cheaper points, for me to build my Hive Tyrants as Walkrants, or should I just go with the Flyrants instead?

Thanks for any help!

Walking Tyrants are mostly for Jourmungandr, since they benefit from the adaptation while their flying counterparts do not and Jourmungadr generally will be running plenty of other monsters for saturation. The main reason the flying Tyrants are more popular (besides everyone having a pile of them from 7th edition) is that they are more mobile and can hide off table for protection against alpha strikes.

Best use for a walking Tyrant is to oversee gunbeasts. They can take a Stranglethorn or HVC and lend fire support of their own while their charges suffer most of the attention.

If you play ITC and don't play Jormung then go with flyrants.

If you play CA18 missions then walkrants do have a role, since those do not reward mobility so much as a cohesive force that advances and holds.

The main difference is that in ITC you score at the end of your turn, so if you fly with a 'rant on an objective, you score.
In CA18 you score at the START of your turn, so your flyrant needs to fly on the objective and survive a whole turn before being able to score. Since it is a glass cannon, you don't want to use it to tank fire, contrarily to the walkrant which is a good defensive model.

On walkrants your closest comparison is carnifexes.

Walkrants get 5++, better WS, Psykick, Synapse. You pay a premium for this and thus it hurts more when he gets killed. It can be good though.

Levoathan can also works as you get your 6+++.

Worth noting that it's a 4++ for both walkrants and flyrants. The 6+++ is mostly irrelevant. Walking monsters want to be Jorgmundr for the 2+ or possibly Kronos for the reroll (not that Tyrants want to be Kronos), flyrants tend to end up in Kraken because the rest of the army is Genestealers Kraken. It's not that Leviathan is necessarily wrong for Tyrants, its that you are rarely building a list that is using Leviathan in the first place.

OP, for the list you have here, I recommend you do two more Flyrants. Put the three Flyrants in a detachment of their own, and have the Swarmlord be part of the battalion that has the other monsters. Add a Neurothrope for now for the second HQ, with the goal of eventually turning him into a Malanthrope. The Neurothrope can babysit the Tyrannofexes while Swarmy + Tyrants get in faces. Use min ripper squads as your troops (cheap, fills the mandatory slot). If you have the points, consider running 20 or so termagants with devourers. They can deep strike using the Trygon's tunnel, put out a lot of shots, and can double shoot using the stratagem.

The Tyrannofexes really want to be Jorgmundr and have Malanthrope next to them. 12W, T8, 2+ Sv, -1 to hit is very durable. The Swarmlord doesn't mind being Jorgmundr, because it and the Mal makes him harder to kill turn 1 when you go second. After turn one Swarmy is either in combat or dead. The flyrants don't really care what Hive Fleet they are. With careful positioning you could get all three of them + Swarmy + 'fexes in a circle around the Malanthrope (assuming the Trygon tunnels), which encourages Jorgmundr, but they don't get the save bonus cause Fly, so eh? I personally like the relic cannons, and would be inclined to pick one and make the Tyrant Supreme command whatever Hive Fleet said relic is in. Kronos has lol potential with the spell denial (Tyrant as warlord to troll caster heavy builds), but unless you plan on adding Hive Guard/Exocrines I'm meh on it.
