Hi all, I’m going to my first ever tournament in a couple of weeks time. It’s a 5 round 1000 point tournament and I’ve no idea what the meta is. I’m thinking of taking something like this and was looking for some feedback.

Battalion

Stacken

Tank Comander - battlecanon and 3 heavy bolters - warlord (old grudges)

Tank Comander - battlecanon, lascannon and heavy bolters

5 x infantry squad

Priest

6 Bullgryn with mauls

Heavy Weapons Squad - 3 mortars

It comes in about 17 points short. I also have 3 hellhounds, a basilisk, rough riders and few more infantry squads/conscripts.

Thanks for looking!

Would drop 1 infantry squad, should give you enough points to take 2 astropaths, gives you access to smite, deny, psychic barrier, and night shroud.
Make sure you downgrade them to laspistols so the points fit.

While I agree you need an Astropath, I'd probably just drop a Mortar Team or the Heavy Bolters from a Russ to pay for them, you need all the infantry you can get in a Catachan list.

Take Barrier on the Astropath, and cast it every turn on the Bullgryn. A Bullgryn in cover with Barrier and the Take Cover stratagem has a -1 save.... meaning even against AP3 weapons you get a 2+ save.

Hey thanks that is great advice! I didn’t know you could remove the telepathic stave. If I do that I can fit it simply by removing 2 heavy bolters from one of the tanks. Does this leave me a bit short of anti infantry though?

Your Catachans are great anti-infantry as it is, I don't think the heavy bolters will make that much of a difference.

You basically got the list, just need some minor adjustments.

I personally like to have my heavy weapons in my infantry squads, but YMMV.

I would also be hesitant to make a Tank Commander my Warlord, just because he can not be hidden (where as Straken can hide behind infantry/tanks and not get targeted).

Thanks @Fisheyes. The reasoning behind the Tank Commander as warlord was allowing him and the other tank to use the old grudges trait to wreck tanks and monsters. However you are right that this will mean against certain armies I’m pretty much giving up ‘slat the warlord’. Perhaps I’ll make the Astropaths the warlord and just keep him close to the tanks turn 1 to pull that trick off. Would that work? He only needs to be 12” from the ogryn to cast barrier on them.

Making the Astropath is an interesting choice, and probably a safe one actually. Normally you'd make a Company Commander the Warlord, but you don't have one, and Stracken's likely to die being in the thick of the fighting. Yea, I'd likely go with the Astropath as Warlord because he'd be easiest to protect.

Thanks again. I would love another company commander as they’re so useful for orders and make it really hard to slay the warlord. Unfortunately I just can’t free up the points.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Agh! Just checked and realised I can’t take Astra Militarum warlord traits with an Astropath as he lacks the right key words

May have to find away to get platoon or company commander.

I'd consider dropping the Mortars honestly. One squad of three of them won't make that much of a difference, you don't have Harker there to buff them anyway. So on average they're gonna get ~10 shots, 5 hits per turn. Not very much. An extra officer on the front lines though, giving you first rank fire or fix bayonettes, will give you significantly more damage.

If he cut both of those he could probably take an astropath and a platoon commander, maybe 2 platoon commanders.

Thanks for all the feedbacks guys, it’s really helpful.

I’ve redone the list and now have:

Battalion

Stacken

Tank Comander - battlecanon and 3 heavy bolters

Tank Comander - battlecanon, lascannon

5 x infantry squad

Vanguard

Company Commander (warlord - old grudges, kurov’s aquila)

Priest

6 Bullgryn with mauls

Astropath - laspistol

Leaves me on 990. I was thinking I’d give the infantry squads a couple of mortars. I agree they won’t do massive amounts but opponents in my area seem to find them very annoying. Open to any better suggestions though.

Thanks for looking!
