So my FLGS had a wonderful tournament and despite my first game being against a pretty WAAC player I had a lot of fun.

Our TO though was very explicit - all tourneys will be Hyperspace format. Because he hates Tie phantoms, with a burning rage.

I mostly don't mind but as a solid Imperial player through 1st ed I felt like Imperials are a bit lacking in this format. Rebels have it easy - they can do high pilot skill X-wings and Falcon, low pilot skill spam lists with Y-wings or any combination.

Scum similarly have solid choices in the Fang fighter, Firespray and Scum Falcon.

Imperials have... Tie advanced? And Reapers which also aren't my main choice. I don't think any of the Imp ships would be my go-to for a list. So my question is: is this a "grass is always greener" kind of viewpoint or are the Imperial choices actually poor? What are your experiences?

Sorry you have TFG as a TO. I'd suggest organizing your own tournaments and banning him from attending.

And yes, Imperials are pretty bad in hyperspace, but hyperspace is a bad format and you should probably ignore it.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I don't know, I rather think TFG is the guy who runs phantoms and Redline. And Vader crew before the nerf.

So I'm not really displeased, I was more curious as to what the prevailing opinions were.

The tourney did get me to finally break down and buy a rebel conversion kit, I'll finally have a use for that alt art Luke I picked up at PAX.

Agree with Peregrine. Your TO sounds like a prime example of TFG: I don't like a certain thing therefore I will ban it. Whisper/Redline/Soontir was a very powerful list before the points adjustment in January but now it's really nowhere near as good. You also have to remember that in non-Hyperspace tournaments everyone else has access to more powerful options too. What will he do when the Phantom is re-released and becomes Hyperspace legal?

As for Imperials in Hyperspace right now, they're pretty much only swarms of some kind. Either a pure swarm or a mini swarm with either Vader or a higher Initiative Striker. The problem is the Imperial platforms available in Hyperspace are not that interesting. You have few options on Strikers and TIE Fighters and the only viable Advanced is Vader. The Reaper is interesting, verging on potentially good, but you lack good crew for it, rendering a lot of it's versatility useless.

Taking competitive lists in a tournament is not TFG behavior. Only running one format so you can ban a ship you don't like is TFG behavior.

Well,,, Hyperspace Trials are supposed to be held in the Hyperspace format. So there is that.

Imperials seem at a disadvantage at the moment, but a good player can more than make up for it. I played a couple of games with our TO (outside of the Trials, so he'd be impartial) and he played us hard with a Vader, Duchess, Countdown (both with Prox mines) and an Academy Pilot as a blocker.

Now granted, my list wasn't the greatest flown by the greatest pilot (still kicking myself over my performance) but I saw it inflict massive damage to U-Wings and Firesprays by counting on the fact that they have a larger footprint with their mines, for one thing.

My point is, if you really know your list, and you're good at flying, you can certainly meet most challenges.
