Community,
A real simple query but one that has caused quite the discussion amongst me and my friends lately. Named characters only.

I see Njall Stormcaller in a lot of other Wolves' players list.
My list doesn't have any named characters, though I have a bunch of them floating around.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Also best asked in the space wolves tactics, as with most SW threads on the main page. You'll get people who actually play them seeing your posts. That said, in my lists i've found that 2 characters are generally worth it: 1. Njal Stormcaller. He has +1 to cast, a third power, and can reroll a deny the witch. He's overpriced at roughly 140, but should see a reduction to similar levels as Tigurius when GW remembers that space wolves exist. 2. Arjac Rockfist. Giving +1 attack to wolf guard can be useful but is also map and list dependent. He's a beast in close combat if he survives to make it there, and is rather difficult for anything other than the bleeding meta edge to slay thanks to his resilience. 3. Logan Grimnar. He lets you reroll 2s to hit in addition to 1s, but it's not worth 170 points, and he only has a 4++, and a 5" move. LOL. If you want him to die turn 1 before he does anything put him in his Sleigh. All other named characters are utter trash and should be considered worse than a generic smash captain. If you build a list specifically to take advantage of them you can get miles out of them, but that's true of nearly any named character.

Thanks Marmatag, i shall post it in the SW thread too, appreciate your comment and feedback.

Njal Stormcaller is very good. I would argue he is worth his points since he is better in melee than a regular librarian. He also gets a bonus to deny.
Bjorn the Fell-handed is an absolute beast. Run him with some kind of bodyguard for screening and he cannot be targeted by shooting as he is a Character. He has the normal bubble aura of a Wolf Lord and boosts it to 9" if he is your Warlord. Mine has shredded everything from Daemon Princes to Wraithknights.

Arjac, because he's a beast, especially if you take him with Wolf Guard.

I take Njal and Bjorn in my lists.
Njal with the +1 to cast and deny, 2 denies and a deny re-roll (provided he's within 12" range) makes him really good for a little psyker defence, plus having a Storm Caller bubble is pretty nice.
Bjorn also has a tendency to do good work for me. I run him with twin lascannons, which makes him a reasonably decent AT platform (and with a Grey Hunters screen, hard to target with shooting) while he makes his way across the table, and he will absolutely tear apart tanks, walkers and monstrous creatures in combat - he'll almost always be 4 attacks with 2+ with re-rolls to hit, 3+ with re-rolls to wound or better with huge AP a D6 wounds a piece. T8 and a 5+ Feel No Pain is pretty handy too, but with no invulnerable he _is_ pretty vulnerable to other monstrous creatures if he doesn't get to attack first.

I've had good results with all of the mentioned Characters; with the exception of Grimnar, whom which I haven't used yet.
As everyone has said, Arjac is just a beast. Very tough to kill and very killy to boot.
Njal is a great defensive psyker; I just wish he had more teeth, like he did in 7th edition.
Bjorn is amazing, especially if he's screened by one or two Venerables with Axe/Shields.

Alright un popular opinion here, but I love Logan on his Chariot. The model is so amazingly over the top but great looking for that. I don't know it's a love/love with me and that model though I know it is silly but I still love him on it, reason be damned.
Arjac is great though, and Njal has been solid as far as I've known him and I like Bjorn as well. The rest are, meh. Oddly enough, those are the characters I have. Though really space wolves haven't been the bleeding meta edge since their 5th edition codex so take what feels great to you as either way it's an uphill battle most times. Oh and wulfen, I hate the models but they hit like a brick to the face applied well.

Njal as everyone said.
If you have more of a mixed and shooty-oriented Imperial Army with a Guard Battalion or so, Murderfang is fantastic as a counter-charge threat. He's just a bit slow for an in-your-face Wolves army. But 7 Str. 12 Flat Damage 3 Attacks hitting on 2s, re-rolling to wound without any buffs or auras is no joke.
