For bigger battles I would recommend a more current ancients rule set. Like MEG or AdLG over DBM or DBMM.

As far as I can tell, ADLG is the current most popular.

For UK tournaments anyway, which is the only real way of measuring what's doing well, so might be applicable to people outside of the UK who don't care for tournaments.

Ancients groups tend to be fairly isolated though, so finding your local group and playing what they prefer will give you a more useful answer than people on Dakka can.
