The gem paints are rather interesting.
The medium is a gel, very much like what is found in more recent runs of their metallics.
It is also a gloss medium.
The pigment levels are very low and they are transparent.
If you were to mix them with lahmian medium it would not with out well as lahmian medium is a matter medium. Water or air brush thinner or water plus.
In practice I use them over black with some of the same color spectrum painted first then I actually blob it on because as it dries it creates a tint of color at the edge which is very gem like.

The medium is gel. And this is also in some of the metalic paints?
If it is the thicknes that gives it is colour, due to low pigment, it would explain why it feels so thick.
But you lost me after that. How does lahmian medium prevent it? Is water better?

But why do you want to make a wash out of them?
They're made of a thick glossy medium, with only a little bit of pigments, that's pretty much the opposite of what you want to use as a base for a wash.

I use them over stormhost silver, good for eyes, targeters, screens and anything glass really
What do you mean by “encased in gem?”
