It's just part of the rules. If I base my spacewolves in snowy tundra it's not guna fit with some game boards and that aside burgle armies or other's bases bases will be off. I just wana leave them blank.

Change my mind.

if you leave them blank your models will look rubbish. seriously.. they could be a GD standard painted figure, but without a realistic base they will just look meh.

If you seriously don't want to base, use clear acrylic disks as mentioned above.

So for space wolves what would be a neutral-ish for baseing

Just do a desert style like what GW do on nearly all their bases or jungle or concrete for a city fight

I let the same thought hold me back for years. Didn’t want to clash with the table, so I just stuck with plain black bases. Now I’m not going to say it looked terrible, or unfinished. That’s very much a personal judgment call. But I am glad I started basing my army. It helps your entire force look more cohesive, you can choose a scheme that helps complement your minis, and yes, it does make them look complete.

Sure, my Ultras are bringing a little of the Macragge polar regions with them wherever they go. But it sets off the blue of their armor nicely, so I’m OK with that.

For my Eldar, with their assorted aspect warrior colors, their maiden world green flowering bases help make the force tie together as one. Even when fighting on blasted ruins.

I just go with types of bases that fit with the model.
Fitting the armour or scheme in contrast or what not.

Also, Space Wolves can have anything. They fight on all types of terrain so it doesn’t really matter, whatever you think fits nicely.
They don’t have to have snow just because of Fenris

Like others have said, if you don't do anything on the bases, personally, they would look unfinished and detract from the model.

You don't need to do anything spectacular though - a basic basing in the right colour will complement your paint scheme without standing out. A good rule of thumb is that predominantly dark models work well with light basing, and vice-versa. So the space wolves, being mainly light grey, might suit a dark rocky/asphalt sort of base, or a dark mud. All it would take is a suitable texture paint with maybe a wash and a drybrush if you want to alter the colour a bit, black or neutral grey/brown base rim, and you'll have a much more complete looking model.

Your army does the game board. The game board doesn't do the army.

Best in practice opts for bases that compliment the models, not the game board.

Of course, if you have a diorama where your models are displayed on, not following the scheme of the diorama background would look silly to no end.

4/5 of the game boards I regularly play on are 'urban' and 1/1 of my planned personal boards is also 'urban', so it was fairly easy for me to pick a basing scheme.

I'm also not going to tell you your models will look "rubbish" without a base completed to someone else's arbitrary standard, because subjective consideration is subjective.

If you don't want to base them, don't base them.

Is there a way to do bases with a fog mist or smoke haze thing that is close to or creeping close to the ground.

I would recommend that if you're not going to base your minis, get clear bases.

Plain black bases make the mini look unfiinished, it's really that simple.

Full disclosure: I’ve never seen or tried this. YMMV

I would start by doing a fade from the base up the mini’s legs with white (or fog color, if getting weird/toxic). How high depending on how foggy, but probably no more then mid-calf. Put either clipped bits of ghost effect swirly stuff, or maybe pulled cotton balls. The whole idea probably requires an airbrush and more skill then me, so good luck!

It doesn’t really matter that bases don’t match boards. At all. If you like the way they look that’s all that matters.

yeah. being smart with your basing can really help accentuate your miniature. I always try to give figures complimentary contrast coiours in the bases. so if the model is mainly green or blue for example, I will use a mix of rust and earth pigments on the base to really accentuate the contrast.

I woudl say unles you are building a diorama where bases would slot it or are building a big display piece base what you like. Teher are lots of tutorials and ideas and wasy to do it.

Personaly I like basing. I think It allows to get coherency, and tell a story for the army, especialy on bigger base.
