So my boys and I are going to start playing Kill Team and we have pretty much no terrain so time to start building. I built a lot of terrain years ago but sold everything off, so this will be starting from scratch and I can build only the items I want and planning them out means they will all work together. Or at least that is my plan. My over all goal here is build up a collection of terrain that we can also use in 40k at some point.

The game board will be 24"x 36" play area made up of 12"x 12" modular boards. Little bigger than the book says but for a modular system I think this size will work better. My goal is to make 10 sections total some the roads so we can adjust the board as needed. I'm going to use 1" pink foam so I will have the option to dig down below ground level if we ever want to. Also thought about doing bigger sections of boards but the 12"x12" I think will give us more flexibility in the long run make storage easier.

On the boards we are going to make Imperial style buildings I want two sets one of ruins and one of non ruin buildings. If they are in the same style we can mix and match buildings as we want for the games. At this point not sure how many buildings but thinking 4 or 5 complete buildings and 6-7 ruins including just corners and rubble. I have started drawing buildings but not happy with the look yet so not ready to start building.

Today I started drawing a outpost that I hope to start building tomorrow. I will attach the drawing so you can see it. Once I have this I'm going to make a mirror image of the building and it could work as a gate house or check point. The drawing isn't complete I don't have doors, hatches, ladders and stuff like that on them but in my head I know where all that goes. This will be a work in progress so I might be changing things as we build.

My youngest wants to learn to build terrain so will be using all this to teach him what I know. We have talked about making videos of our progress and track how it all turns out so that is our plan, might not do our first one but will be sharing all the builds for sure.

Ok wanted to share and have a place to post pics as we go.

If this is in the wrong section let me know.

If I would figure out how to post pics with out creating another account like photo bucket(is that is around?) I would post som pics of the outpost.

I got it all built did make a few "character details" (mistakes) but it turned out pretty well. I need to get some flock and finish the base but it is table ready now.

My plan is to make 2 or 3 more mainly for the practice and to allow my son to build a some. We will keep 2 and give the extras to the local game store.

You can upload images directly to Dakka, it's pretty straightforward.

Look at the left hand side of the screen at this link.

How do you plan to join the boards?

The easiest way in my experience is to have pavement/roads/ both around the edge and scatter terrain to break them up after being put together. With two set depths you can create on the finished board single or two lane roads, or something in between. Also allows anything to connect to each other.

I would also suggest at least one 2'x1' board to allow you to break up the uniform edges of the 1'x1' tiles and allow a larger terrain piece. Something perhaps like a large church, landing pad and infrastructure, or other center piece you can bring out for certain missions.

@ Gael knight Thanks I didn't realize I could do it that way. These pics are about at the half way point. I have painted the ground and making does details to mount on the wall to break up the large flat areas.

Also the 2nd floor window I made too low so might try to do some battle damage repairs on that or night just leave it and fix on the next one.

This is my first terrain in 8-9 years so didn't work perfect but it will do for a start for sure.

@The Real Chris

My thought is if I make the roads always meet in the same place on the sections with roads they should line up okay. But I do think making terrain pieces to place on the joints will help cover up the joints well.

Doing a larger board for bigger buildings is a good idea for sure. Making a 40k church would be really nice or even a large factory. Too many options and not enough storage space to keep it all.

Okay so lessons learned on the first outpost. Tonight I'm building another outpost, same layout but I have redrawn the floor plan to make the walls little more uniformed and think I'm going to add a solid rear wall.

I'm thinking I can really improve the look with some small changes to how I built it. I will post new pics tomorrow and show how I have changed it.

Okay so started 2 more outposts last night.

I built one and my son built one. Did some changing to the design to make it look a little cleaner. Still have lots of details to add and paint but this gets us something to play with tomorrow night.

Today I plan on buying the 1" foam and cutting it down to the correct size and maybe do some texturing but not sure will have time for that.

I have done both methods and while the roads always being x inches down a side is ok on big boards, it can be very hard to make work on small boards. You have basically got a grid of 6 squares (or 4 squares and one rectangle), having roads go across the tiles really cuts down on what you can do with them. Have a plan with some squares of paper to see what you can do with be my advice (I have a wonderful terrain'ed board that due to a cock up on my part can only be put together in one way - all the other ways there is a dirty road unaligned...)

The simple method makes it a lot easier to expand... Would look a bit like this.

I thought about doing the roads down edges of the tiles but I worried it would limit my over all layout options. This is what I was thinking

But I might need to rethink all this and maybe do a mix of both at some point.

So roads are restrictive - I have a set of boards like your proposal and it really limits the set ups possible.

It also means right angled corners. Cross roads and t junctions yes, but at least in the UK we often have a curve to our corners!

One alternative I might do if I do another skirmish board is a raised roadway. This would allow a textured/rubble strewn board (in this case an under hive) that fitted together any which way, but then I could place this raised road down anywhere I liked and with laser cut pieces and a simple hydrolic leg it would look I hope ok.
Of course the other option is a properly raised road like a highway in an urban area as that is road, barriers and support columns making placement easy...

Gunrunner @ those look very nice

The real chris @ I have decided to drop the road idea because of the restrictiveness. We realized that over the weekend as we where building the boards.

Raised roads might be a good idea for sure.

We also dropped the 12"x12" sections because of the seams are a paint to get right. We did a 24"x36" board and we can do more for 40k games. Hoping to get some pics this week of our stuff.

Thanks and yeah the back isn't great.

I wanted the back open so I could place minis inside real easy. I didn't like the idea of making it solid wanted it all to be playable.

Thinking about making a section to go between the two towers like a large draw bridge or large gate.

Okay first 2 building are done loaded pics on the top post.

One night this week hoping to start making more buildings, my son thinks it might be a good idea to toss these guys up on Ebay and make more to keep.
