As I understand it, most people recommend fielding cultists in as large a blob as possible.

I see the point of this when you are using Black Legion with Abaddon because he makes them fearless and you can use tide of traitors to bring them back as long as they’re not completely annihilated.

What if you’re not using Black Legion? Since you can’t make them fearless without spending CP they are now susceptible to being wiped through morale. So at this point is it worth going MSU, perhaps to generate CP?

Both approaches are fine even a mix. I still have problems fitting marines because cultists are still that good at 5 ppm. I do prefer at least 1 large unit.

Cultist blobs are really recomendable if you are either IW, or Bl with abbadon.
For the rest ofthe legions, the blob can (could since since the trait got removed) work.

Alternatively if you are R&H and have an enforcer cultists can work aswell in blob format.
But on average the MSU for troop tax is the best way to go.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Also never forget 2cp and ye passing that morale test.

For straight board presence blocking etc imo a load of brimstone horrors are still good at 3pts each
