So Kill team is a fairly new idea to me, not long ago I was up for the idea of playing Deathwatch in normal 40k, so I jumped down the hole and bought the codex and 5 veterans. Then the idea struck me of lugging army carry cases about and the set up/pack up time. So that has sort of killed my motivation and obviously there's the expense of even getting a small 1000pt army going.

I was at my local GW last week. I went there with the intention of buying the space marine commander box and some Deathwatch veterans with the idea of making some sweet models with all the bits. Both of them weren't in stock. So next up was the kill team core rules or kill team mordelai. I chose the mordelai box set since I've been itching to do modelling for a while since I finished my first 5 veterans.

Anyway from a redit post today I found out you can't have a model with a storm shield and a bolter in kill team. Why exactly? It sucks considering in 40k you can and I've already finished my model in this way. I had my suspicions about this due to watching a battle report but it was very vague, so I asked the manager about this and he straight up said yes you can have both on a model. He just wanted my money and probably didn't even search his memory. I'm just wounded because it's my best model yet. Converted, based and painted to the best of my ability, all for me to just pretend it's modelled a different way.

The answer to why is because the rules say so. You can always run him as a counts as something else.

Yup, no particular reason and it's a shame because it looks awesome. Lots of options allowed in 40K aren't allowed in KT (not just for DW) so don't be trusting your codex to tell you what you're allowed.

Also, good lesson here - redshirts tend not to be great at rules knowledge.

Though he may mean yes you can use it - when Kill Team Elites comes out.

Also though, did they not do a Mordecai data sheet type thing for them at any point? Or just 40k.
If not, that may come soon, if Eelites doesn’t handle it when it comes..

They've already said that Elites is a separate game mode like Commanders, not additions to the base game so very unlikely.

Are you talking about Kill Team Cassius? No, there's no KT data sheet (since it includes units not in KT that's not a surprise). If you mean Mordelai that's just a preconfig team using the standard options.

That is completely baseless speculation. Also, so far the only two oddball pre-config teams (Gaunt's Ghosts and Tanith First) aren't even matched play legal and all of the others only contain models permitted by the standard rules for the faction.

Pull the arm off and add a power weapon. Or magnets.

I guess it depends on if you want to play just kill team or 40k as well. If you are going to do both then all your 40k models will probably not translate directly over to KT.

Play Chaos Space Marines in Kill Team and see how limited your options are. One of your two marine gunners has to be a heavy bolter. No such restriction exists in full 40k.

Kill Team has some screwy rules in places. I think a lot of this comes from the idea that Games Workshop only halfheartedly put the rules together as a sort half-supported specialist game that wouldn't see all that much play beyond new players who just didn't have a full 40k army yet much like previous editions of Kill Team. Sure, there are some interesting game mechanics (for a GW product) while largely not changing much of how proper 40k works. However, it feels like there are several places where the rules just didn't get enough time and/or effort to smooth everything out. Honestly, I don't think GW thought Kill Team would do as well as it did so they didn't put enough resources to make it a better game. That is understandable given its history, but it does leave some areas that could use much improvement.

At very least, you can be happy Deathwatch is top tier in Kill Team, and depending on the mission type (not Arena), is the best faction in the game even without the bolter/storm shield load out.
