Which do people think are better to use in IG armies? Ratlings seem pretty good but their saves and movement are inferior to a veteran with a rifle and are unable to use regimental doctrine.

Opinions?

Ratlings: 100% sniper rifles, no inefficiency, gets to move after shooting.

Veterans: three sniper rifles and seven marginally useful lasguns, does not get to move after shooting.

Neither unit wants to move in the movement phase so movement speed is irrelevant, and both units have the same save assuming you do the obvious and put them into cover. The only advantage veterans have is doctrines, and the sheer efficiency of ratlings is better than any doctrine bonus.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

A fair point, that's kind of what I was thinking. Thanks

You don’t bring ratlings for sniper rifles, you bring them for board control due to their deployment abilities, and then enjoy their sniper rifles as a bonus. Veterans can’t do that.

Sniper rifles just aren’t very good.

I agree. An individual Ratling is a point cheaper than a Veteran, according to the codex.

As an option just to say there is one, you *could* take Command Squads with 4x Sniper Rifles. No Lasguns for inefficiency. You have the Regiment Keyword, so they can benefit from Regiment Traits and receive orders. They're a point more expensive per model. You don't have to use the ugly ratling models.

You do lose "infiltrate" and shoot sharp and scarper though, which is quite handy to move out of LOS, kite an assault unit, or generally be more useful than Command Squad equivalent... but if you were really against using the abominable Ratling models, and wanted to by WYSIWYG, then Command Squads are not-offensive by comparison.

But not Veteran squads. That would be a waste.

Really not a fan of any of the Ratling models, huh?
