GW used to do shop trophies by 'chroming' space marines. The paint tended to look a bit thick, blocking up some of the details.
You'll need a gloss black primer usually which can also be a bit thick - check the can as they normally say what to use but it shouldn't chemically interact with the plastic mini.

You can also vacuum metallise plastics (the usual way it's done for toys).
Certain FX companies have figured out ways to metallise flexible rubbers, too (Bucky Barnes' bionic arm in the Marvel movies is foamed urethane that was metallised).
